USB-C in every modern Android smartphone. Otherwise, of course, Xiaomi is no exception. Until now, however, it has been using a rather outdated USB 2.0 standard—even on flagship smartphones. This is finally set to change, and along with the new port, the Xiaomi 13 and Redmi K60 Pro series should also arrive.
Xiaomi is finally moving to the USB 3 standard
The Chinese blogger Digital Chat Station announced that Xiaomi will equip this year’s smartphones and tablets with a USB-C connector of version 3.x. This is a major upgrade that will deliver a significant change in transfer speeds. Xiaomi was the only one among the five largest Chinese mobile phone manufacturers that still hadn’t switched to the USB 3 standard.
The theoretical maximum transfer speed of the USB 2.0 port is 480 Mbps. Switching to USB 3 can provide speeds up to 5 Gbps. That gives us a maximum of about 625 MB/s, but since USB 3.0 uses 8 bits out of 10 for transmission, this value needs to be multiplied by 0.8.
As a result, you can expect a maximum theoretical transfer speed of 500 MB/s. It will be a real jump from the original 60 MB/s.
It’s possible you didn’t notice this limit yet. The problem affected users who, for example, often move large multimedia files to a PC via a cable. But you’ll notice the difference even while using USB devices, such as external SSD drives.
File transfers via USB OTG will be noticeably faster. Xiaomi has no doubt decided on the right change and, finally in this regard, is catching up with its competition. Better late than never.
