You’ve probably noticed that most new smartphones from Chinese Xiaomi come with a battery larger than or equal to 4000 mAh. A sort of imaginary battery-capacity standard is now also trying to be defined by the CEO of the Redmi brand, Lu Weibing.

It’s not just flagship models, but also more affordable smartphones. The latest officially announced devices like Xiaomi Mi 10, Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Redmi K30 Pro, or Redmi Note 9S exceed the mentioned threshold and offer a capacity larger than or equal to up to 4500 mAh.
Lu Weibing: Two reasons for the increased power draw
- The power consumption of the latest Qualcomm processors (8 series) increases by roughly 20 % compared to the previous 7 series.
- Using 5G technology leads to a significant rise in power consumption—compared to other 4G smartphones, it’s as much as 20 % more power.
According to Lu Weibing, CEO of the Redmi brand, a current mobile device with a 5G processor from the newest generation and a 4000 mAh battery would achieve roughly equivalent battery life to a 4G device with a 3200 mAh battery.
Lu Weibing also says that the minimum battery that should go into new 5G smartphones is roughly around 4500 mAh.
A truly good value is already at the 4,700 mAh level offered by the new device Redmi K30 Pro, as well as Xiaomi Mi 10.
When it comes to device sales, we shouldn’t see multiple smartphones without 5G connectivity—at least when it comes to the domestic market, meaning the Chinese one.
That means the upcoming smartphones should come with a 4500 mAh battery, or even larger.
