The Xiaomi 11T smart phone series has a virtual AI smart proximity sensor instead of a hardware one. This is why

Xiaomi has teamed up with Elliptic Labs and created a virtual proximity sensor. It was first used in Xiaomi 11T-series smart phones.

AI INNER BEAUTY

The new sensor is called AI INNER BEAUTY. It’s a virtual proximity sensor. In principle, the sensor uses the AI Virtual Smart Sensor Platform. This means hardware solutions are replaced by software—reducing costs and freeing up a bit more space inside the device that can be used otherwise.

This partnership has been in place since 2016. Previous reports pointed to the partnership being terminated due to faulty sensors in newer POCO and Xiaomi devices. So the partnership continues.

As Elliptic Labs’ CEO stated, the AI virtual smart sensor platform enables manufacturers to roll out new features while skipping hardware sensors and cutting costs.

Xiaomi 11T series

Xiaomi 11T-series smart phones were unveiled last Wednesday at a major autumn conference. Both models offer a 6,67-inch flat AMOLED display and Full HD (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The display is protected by durable Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

Cheaper 11T model comes with a MediaTek processor, specifically the Dimensity 1200-Ultra model. The more expensive Pro variant will bring a powerful Snapdragon 888. Both models support 5G networks.

The main camera has the same resolution of 108 MPx. The smart phones also have water and dust resistance according to IP53 certification. Xiaomi has also equipped them with high-quality stereo speakers from Harman / Kardon. The batteries still have a solid capacity of 5 000 mAh, but only the Pro model offers fast charging up to 120-watt. As a result, a fully charged smart phone takes just a record 17 minutes.

We expect Xiaomi to roll out this sensor gradually to other new models as well. We’re also curious what they’ll use this space for.
