Finally: Xiaomi 13 Ultra is supposed to be the first Xiaomi smartphone with a modern USB 3.0 connector

The Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is preparing its top-tier model in the current lineup under the name Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which should also be equipped with a modern USB 3.x connector. These are fresh leaks.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra: the specs will also include a modern USB 3.x connector

Xiaomi already bet on older USB technology with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, using the USB 2.0 standard. This very feature—and not using a newer standard—became the target of criticism, especially in connection with direct competition, e.g., from the well-known South Korean company Samsung.

However, since last year, leaks have started spreading that the Chinese company is also testing USB with the USB 3.0 standard, and that higher data transfer speeds should appear at least in flagship devices. The first such device should be the flagship and high-performance Xiaomi 13 Ultra, which is currently in the preparation stage.

New information comes from a reliable source nicknamed Digital Chat Station. It claims that the upcoming Xiaomi 13 Ultra will be equipped with a port marked as USB 3.x, though its exact details are not specified. If this information turns out to be true, it would be the first time that Xiaomi offers this newer USB standard in a smartphone. At the moment, this standard is supported only by some gaming devices under the Black Shark sub-brand.

Why is this important?

To better understand why this news is a benefit, it’s enough to know a few facts. USB 3.0 provides higher data transfer speed and more efficient power delivery management compared to older USB 2.0. It also offers high-resolution display output—for example to an HDMI connector. This can be useful, e.g., when preparing a presentation on a larger screen or presenting it on a projector screen.

For a reminder, Xiaomi 13 Ultra should be the most fully equipped flagship smartphone introduced already this month. However, we’ll likely see the Chinese version first, and then—after a few weeks—a global one intended also for European customers.

From previous leaks we know that, following the Xiaomi 12S series, the new model should deliver a top-tier photography experience with four sensors and cooperation with Leica. Performance will be handled by the flagship chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, paired with 16 GB LPDDR5x RAM and 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage. On the software side, it will offer Android 13 with the manufacturer’s custom skin. And fast wired and wireless charging won’t be missing either, with performance not specified.
