Xiaomi’s new flagship, Xiaomi, is a highly anticipated smartphone this year. However, a very important element is also its camera setup. And it’s truly packed — after all, the Pro version of the smartphone is currently leading the popular DxO Mark ranking.

Now it’s time for a comparison of three models Mi 10, Mi Note 10 and iPhone 11 Pro. How did the cameras perform?

Mi 10, Mi Note 10 and iPhone 11 Pro

First and foremost, it’s necessary to highlight the camera hardware of the new smartphone Xiaomi Mi 10. Even though it isn’t the Pro model — it’s the base, or maybe an even cheaper version — it doesn’t have to be ashamed of its camera performance.

The camera lineup in Xiaomi Mi 10

It’s built around a 108 MPx sensor (f/1.69), complemented by a wide-angle 12 MPx sensor (f/2.4), a 2 MPx “macro” sensor, and a 2 MPx depth sensor. You’ll also appreciate support for up to 8K video (30 fps) or up to 20 MPx front camera placed under the display in the punch-out.

As you surely know, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro scored a record rating in DxOmark — 124 points — but compared to the Mi 10, it has a slightly better sensor lineup. However, it’s important to note that the current camera software in the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro isn’t yet tuned to 100% and Xiaomi is planning a major update. Here’s what DxOmark had to say:

“We tested the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro on firmware that Xiaomi plans to provide to customers via an OTA (Over The Air) update to 5. March, so the device we tested is a pre-production unit. As always in these cases, we repeat the test with a commercial device as soon as it becomes available, to confirm that image quality is the same.”

A showdown in video and photo quality

The front camera comparison from the test video clearly shows that the iPhone will deliver a slightly more realistic rendering of skin and colors. Xiaomi Mi 10 will offer higher brightness and brighter, more colorful tones — which isn’t always an advantage.

Recording video from the start looked better in Xiaomi’s favor. The iPhone’s stabilization caught up with the Chinese manufacturer by a few seconds later. But the mentioned 8K is still quite hard to use in practice for now — 4K will most likely be used more often.

Next up is zoom, where the tenfold value is readable both on the Xiaomi device and on Apple’s. The interesting part could be the model Mi Note 10, which also offers a 108 MPx sensor, but with a weaker processor.

When it comes to the wide-angle sensor, both smartphones are genuinely high quality. The difference is in how colors are rendered: iPhone offers warmer and more saturated colors, while Xiaomi goes with cooler and slightly more realistic colors. So the final choice in this category is very individual.

The main sensor is truly universal and can produce high-quality, sharp, detailed photos with accurate colors. Even if the iPhone can dominate, for example in terms of video, the sensors in the Mi 10 and Mi Note 10 models will offer different options for combining modes and using them with multiple zoom.

It’s honestly hard to believe how similar the photo quality is compared to the much more expensive model from American Apple. In the end, it absolutely stood out in worse lighting conditions.

Although the base Mi 10 version comes with different camera hardware compared to the Pro version, which leads the aforementioned ranking, it’s possible the smartphones still include a pre-production version of the software. The manufacturer should offer its next software update distributed to users starting March 5 / března 2020. The update should improve many camera features.
