Xiaomi is bringing a wide range of smart wearables to the market. Smartwatches are also part of this lineup. Let’s be honest, though. The offered smartwatches may have more options and functions than regular watches, but something is missing to make them perfect. We mean an open operating system. In the future, this could change. At Xiaomi, they are probably working on new watches that will have an operating system from Google – Wear OS.
The new version of Wear OS brought a surprise
Google has started rolling out a new version of the Wear OS app with the version number 2.28. A new string with the name “xiaomi_companion_name” and the value “Mi Wear” appeared in the code of this app. This code points to an app named “Mi Wear”.
Xiaomi currently offers an app called “Mi Fit” in the Google Play store, as well as an app called “Mi Health” in its own app store. However, at the moment there is no app named “Mi Wear”.
On closer inspection of the code, it turned out that the Wear OS app checks for the presence of the “PartnerCompanion” app. One of the package names shown here is “com.huawei.health”, which matches the Huawei Health app. Watch models Huawei Watch and Watch 2 ran on Android, so it’s no surprise that the reference to Huawei Health is here.
On the other hand, the package name “com.xiaomi.wearable” does not correspond to any app we can find in the Google Play Store, the Xiaomi store, or on third-party websites such as APKMirror. Just like Huawei Health, here it’s also visible that the “Mi Wear” app has a “PartnerService” that the Wear OS app checks.
References to the yet-unpublished Mi Wear app in APK Wear OS are enough reason for us to say that Xiaomi is working on smartwatches running the Android operating system.
Further analysis shows that a new name for a smartwatch appeared in the code: “Mi Watch”. Even though it’s not possible to confirm right now whether this will be the exact name of Xiaomi’s new smartwatches. Since this information comes from examining the code of a new Wear OS version, statements from the competent parties are not available yet. At the moment, we don’t know whether any Mi Watch would be manufactured by Huami’s subsidiary or another brand. It’s also premature to speculate about the launch date or other details.
