Xiaomi has patented an unprecedented technology: a movable ultra-wide camera for smartphones

There’s no doubt that smartphone cameras make significant progress every year. The Chinese Xiaomi has now patented the movable ultra-wide camera designed for smartphones, and we already know the first information about this upcoming technology.

Xiaomi: Movable ultra-wide camera

Last year, we could witness several patents secured by the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi. This large number of different and creative ideas will now be complemented by another patent, which should be about a movable ultra-wide camera designed for smartphones.

New information comes from the workshop of the popular website LetsGoDigital. It shows that Xiaomi has already registered a new USPTO patent. Its sketches point to a completely unusual mobile camera that should allow us to get a wider field of view.

As we can see in the technology sketch, this new idea from the Chinese manufacturer adds two cameras to the back of the smartphone, which can move horizontally. This would allow both cameras to achieve a larger field of view without the need for an ultra-wide sensor.

The highest-quality photo from a smartphone

Thanks to this technology, distortion of the image could also be avoided—something we can see today especially in wide-angle shots in the corners and along the edges of photos.

By combining the two photos obtained using this pair of sensors, we could get the best wide-angle photo that a mobile phone can produce at the moment.

To recap: this is another ambitious patent from the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi. However, we currently can’t say whether it will make it into mass production—or whether it will be left to gather dust. Still, it’s clear that Xiaomi is aiming to constantly improve its smartphones. The number of newly acquired patents is a strong indication of that.
