The upcoming successor in the upper mid-range segment from Xiaomi could play a double game when it comes to processors, with different sales markets. The new smartphone Redmi Note 9 Pro could be distributed in the Chinese home market with 5G technology and a MediaTek Dimensity 800 chipset.

Once it arrives in the European market, the situation would flip. Official distribution would import the Note 9 Pro model with a Qualcomm-made processor, which is a bit more established in Europe. Specifically, the smartphone could use the variant labeled Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, with 4G network support.

MediaTek or Qualcomm? A bit of both

No wonder—its predecessor, the Redmi Note 8 Pro, debuted under the Redmi brand with a MediaTek chipset, and the smartphone enjoyed real popularity. So the Chinese manufacturer wants to test MediaTek’s chip power again.

The Note 9 Pro model could come equipped with the expected MediaTek Dimensity 800. However, a 5G-capable processor in this price category is more the exception, so another chip is also in play for the developing Indian market, as well as other markets outside China.

It’s likely the infrastructure that’s not yet sufficiently developed for 5G in India—but also in Spain and other European countries—that could be the reason for two different processors in the package of the upcoming model.

So the Redmi Note 9 Pro could be available in China with 5G support and a MediaTek chipset, while in other countries it will run the more stable global version with 4G and a Snapdragon 720G processor.

What does MediaTek offer?

To take a closer look at the issue, we also need to consider the processor configuration itself: the MediaTek. The octa-core Dimensity 800 features 4 Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz and 4 Cortex-A55 cores clocked at roughly the same frequency. It’s complemented by a Mali G77 GPU.

In addition, the Dimensity 800 model can support up to four cameras with a maximum resolution of 64 MPx, and it can record video at 4K resolution with HDR support. This processor also includes the mentioned 5G support; it supports FullHD+ displays with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, and its target audience can be devices priced around 300 euros / 7610 Kč.

Snapdragon 720G won’t be left behind

On the other hand, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor also pushes back. It should replace the existing Snapdragon 710 or 712 models, but it won’t support 5G. It will bring new Kryo 465 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz.

The processor should be paired with an Adreno 618 GPU. Its benefits include support for up to 192 MPx (raw) sensors, or 48 MPx with noise reduction; Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, and fast charging up to 30W are also included.
