Robotic vacuum cleaners have come a long way over the past ten years. While the first models would ram into walls without much thought and clean mostly by chance, today they’re equipped with laser sensors, can create a detailed map of your apartment, and can return to the docking station on their own. Still, they all had one huge drawback: they couldn’t handle stairs.
Why are stairs the biggest enemy of robots?
The obstacle of stairs is now trying to be broken by the Dreame brand, which at IFA 2025 in Berlin unveiled its new concept called Cyber X. And it’s not some marketing gimmick—this system can truly climb stairs up to 25 centimeters high, and then safely descend back down.
Anyone who has a multi-level apartment or house knows this. The robot can vacuum an entire floor perfectly, but if you want it to clean the second one too, you have to pick it up and carry it. That defeats the whole idea—having a robot save you time and energy.
The first brand to bring this topic up was Eufy, which at IFA showed off its Marswalker model. Dreame, however, didn’t fall behind and introduced its own solution just a few hours later—which many say is even more sophisticated. So it’s clear that stair-climbing won’t be just a short-term experiment, but a new development trend in robotic vacuum cleaners.
How does Dreame Cyber X work?
Cyber X doesn’t rely on the vacuum itself climbing the stairs. That would involve too many compromises in size, weight, or battery life. Dreame therefore came up with a modular solution. The vacuum itself is lightweight and optimized for standard floor cleaning. Then the transport module QuadTrack acts like a “track elevator.”
In practice, the vacuum drives onto the QuadTrack, which has four arms with tracks similar to those on a tank. They press against the individual steps, and move the vacuum up or down step by step. The whole process isn’t fast—about 0.2 meters per second—but it’s as safe as it gets.
Safety is ensured by special brakes adapted to different surfaces, from wooden parquet to stone and carpets. The system is also equipped with a laser scanner that creates a 3D image of the staircase and calculates the most suitable route. That means Cyber X can adapt to different stair shapes, even a spiral staircase.
Battery life and autonomy you haven’t seen yet
One of the biggest concerns for users is usually battery life. Dreame handles this smartly—not only does the vacuum itself have its own battery, but the transport module also includes a battery with a capacity of 6 400 mAh.
In practice, that means Cyber X can clean up to five floors on a single charge. So you don’t have to worry that after climbing to the second floor, the vacuum will run out of power.
QuadTrack also works as a docking station—once the robot finishes the job, it parks there and charges. That means you don’t need any extra charging station; everything is part of one system.
When can we buy Cyber X?
Dreame has not revealed the exact release date yet, but according to information from the trade show itself, the first commercial versions could appear as early as 2026. The price is still unknown, but you can expect it to be a premium product—after all, this is a technology that changes the rules of the game.
At first glance, it might look like an interesting gimmick, but in reality it’s a huge step forward. Stairs have so far been the biggest obstacle for autonomous vacuum cleaners. If Cyber X can overcome them, it means that robotic vacuums will for the first time in history truly become independent helpers for entire households.
And even more importantly, Dreame didn’t just show one product here. It presented the concept of a modular solution that can be further developed in the future. In theory, you could have one transport module and attach different cleaning robots to it—vacuum, mop, or even a window-cleaning robot.
Of course, the first generation may have its downsides—higher price, slower movement, or limitations on certain types of stairs. But one thing is certain: the era of robots that can handle the whole home without your help may start sooner than you think.
