Today is one of the most important days of the year for Xiaomi. In addition to a spectacular conference hosted by the Redmi brand, the company also introduced another subsidiary brand. The new gaming smartphone Black Shark 2 is officially here.

A true gaming design

What would a gaming product be without a gaming design? The new Black Shark 2 pushed the limits of gaming design in smartphones even further. One thing that stands out is the back, which features an ergonomic, letter-shaped cover molded into the shape of an “X”. It’s made of matte metal, but there’s also glass here.

There’s no shortage of a backlit logo either, and backlighting has also been added on the side. These are the elements that deliver the real gaming experience. The smartphone comes in black, but also in a new silver and blue colorway that looks great. Dimensions are 163.61 x 75.01 x 8.77 and the weight is 205 grams.

AMOLED with ultra-fast response

Black Shark 2 comes with a 6.39″ display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 px (FullHD+) without a notch or a hole-punch. This means the screen has no interruptions that would distract during gaming. It uses a high-quality AMOLED panel enhanced with the new Trueview Display technology. It’s designed to deliver true-to-life colors in any situation.

There’s also HDR technology, which improves colors. The MEMC technology, on the other hand, ensures perfectly sharp imagery even during fast gaming scenes. The display on the Black Shark 2 is also among the fastest used in a smartphone to date. Its response time is just 43.5 ms, which is more than above average for smartphones.

A complete newcomer is Magic Press technology, which detects how strongly the user presses on the screen. It’s a 3D touch function, thanks to which the player can do much more with two fingers. The pressure on the left and right sides of the screen is mapped independently, giving the player broader control options in the game.

A proper gaming smartphone also needs great speakers. That’s why the manufacturer equipped its new device with a pair of stereo speakers on the front. It also includes three microphones and AI for noise reduction in the background. When streaming games, viewers will also get high-quality audio.

Great performance, cooling, and a battery

As was already revealed before the presentation, Black Shark 2 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm. It’s available in versions with 6, 8, and 12 GB of RAM. The internal storage comes with 128 or 256 GB. The Elite Gaming gaming mode ensures smooth gameplay by optimizing performance.

Among the most notable innovations is liquid cooling Liquid Cooling 3.0. The new liquid cooling system can reduce the processor temperature by up to 14°C. The cooling plate itself has an area of up to 14555 mm2 and is 20× more effective than in the predecessor.

Longer gaming sessions are handled by a solid 4000 mAh battery, which features one of the fastest charging speeds on the market. Charging runs at up to 27 W, and just 5 minutes on the charger is enough for half an hour of play.

48 MPx camera, strong antennas

The manufacturer didn’t forget about a quality camera either. Its new gaming device is equipped with a dual-camera setup with a 48 MPx main sensor Sony IMX586 with an f/1.75 aperture, which you can also find in the Mi 9.

Secondary Samsung S5K3M5 telephoto lens has a resolution of 12 MPx, an aperture of f/2.2, pixel size of 1.0μm, and 2x optical zoom. The front camera will capture selfies in 20 MPx resolution and with an aperture of f/2.0. The camcorder will record 4K video at 30 fps.

The highlight is also the smart antenna placement “X+2”. The antennas are positioned in the corners of the smartphone, eliminating signal attenuation. In the package, you’ll find WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, GPS with AGPS, Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX & aptX HD support, and a fingerprint sensor built into the display.

There’s also DualSIM functionality and even full LTE. Black Shark 2 also comes with the B20 LTE band, suggesting availability on the European market. The special Shark button boots up the gaming environment Sharkspace, and compatibility with its own gaming gamepads is a given.
