Recently, the Xiaomi 12 series of smartphones was unveiled. One model, specifically the 12 Pro, also includes a processor developed by Xiaomi called Surge P1. The Chinese giant on the social network Weibo shared how this special chip works.

The mighty Surge S1 chip

The Surge S1 chip was developed after 18 months and the company spent almost €14 million.  It ensures that the Xiaomi 12 Pro smartphone, which includes a 4600 mAh battery, can be fully charged in a record 15 minutes, while the battery temperature does not exceed 37 degrees Celsius.

Xiaomi also developed a 200-watt charging technology that can charge a 4000 mAh battery in just 8 minutes. Besides the battery, this chip also ensures that the used Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor will not reach a temperature higher than 43 degrees Celsius—even when playing demanding 3D games.

Until now, the technology was based on splitting the battery itself into two cells and charging them simultaneously, which is why high charging speeds could be achieved. Now it’s one cell, and while it was part of the smartphone, this battery went through more than 2 500 tests.

Currently, the Chinese giant offers two devices that can charge at 120 W power. These are Xiaomi 11T Pro and Xiaomi MIX 4. Both are available only for the Chinese market.

The new charging type used in the Xiaomi 12 Pro results in a lower battery thickness and more stable temperatures during charging. According to Xiaomi, this system is up to 7 times more efficient.

In addition, it enables up to 50-watt wireless charging and 10-watt reverse charging, which the Xiaomi 12 Pro model also supports.

Safety first

Xiaomi didn’t forget about safety either. The Xiaomi Surge P1 chip supports up to 42 levels of safety protection. It also has certification from TÜV Rheinland Safe Fast Charging System 3.0.

According to the vice chairman of Xiaomi Group’s technical committee, Wang Fei, Xiaomi achieves the best balance across three parameters: charging power, battery endurance, and battery thickness.
