Comment: Redmi Note 14 Pro+5G and Note 14 Pro 5G are a letdown for us Europeans. India and China, we can only envy

The Redmi Note 14 series has been officially unveiled, including a version for the global market. The fact is, though, this year’s edition is extremely stripped down compared to versions made for the Chinese or Indian market.

The new Redmi Note 14 series is already losing its point

Let’s go through it properly. The Redmi Note smartphone series started out as an affordable line under the Xiaomi brand. The Redmi Note 1 model was officially launched in March 2014, and these devices were primarily sold through online marketplaces. They had an attractive price and interesting specs.

Xiaomi boasts millions of sales.

Today we’ve got the fourteenth generation, which is already officially sold through local distributors across Europe and comes with a two-year warranty. Naturally, the price has gone up, the number of models has grown, but so have the compromises. Don’t get us wrong: official distribution, customs clearance of the products, and ensuring warranty service are costs that end up reflected in the final device prices.

And, most importantly, Redmi—now a subsidiary brand—isn’t the only one in the lineup anymore. We’ve got POCO too, bringing new smartphones to the global market that “cannibalize” the Redmi Note line—or even surpass it. Below, we explain a few examples.

Redmi Note 14 Pro+5G: Cut-down specs and a high global price

The flagship of the Redmi Note series is a model with a long name packed with numbers, characters, and 5G connectivity. In other words, this year it’s Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G. The manufacturer Xiaomi, of course, boasts that these top models of the series bring flagship specs to a lower class, but the question is – at what price?

These are the specs of the global smartphone.

The official retail price of this smartphone in Europe starts a few cents below the 500 € mark. In higher storage versions, you’ll also get over 520 €. And that’s not small money. Yes, Samsung and Apple offer either older or refurbished devices for that price. The mentioned POCOs (for example, the new X7 Pro) as well as Motorola or Nothing Phone don’t sleep—they deliver significantly better or cheaper smartphones in the same category.

In recent generations, the Redmi Note series has focused mainly on photography. On the other hand, POCO targets gamers. Let’s be honest: for four hundred euros you won’t get flagship photos, not in any case, and not even from “the Chinese”. But if we’re talking about “photographers”, why does the global version get only a regular, run-of-the-mill 200 MPx sensor?

The global customer also gets more of the same: run-of-the-mill 8 MPx ultra-wide shots and the leftover 2 MPx macro camera. Have you ever actually used it?

Besides that, the smartphone offers only a minimal battery increase of 5110 mAh. The 120 W charger included in the box is a pretty weak patch for a global-version pricing policy like this.

India’s the winner!

Just look at India. There, the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G looks just the same at first glance. But at a much lower price of only 372 € (8+128 GB for 30 999 rupees), it offers a significantly better 50 MPx Light Fusion 800 sensor (from the pricier POCO F6 Pro). And no, it’s not just about megapixels. What’s more, the Indian version includes up to a 50 MPx telephoto lens—something we in Europe can only dream of!

India and China (their specs are identical) also add IP69K coverage and an unbelievable 6200 mAh battery with outstanding single-charge endurance. The battery also uses brand-new silicon-carbon technology, the same one found in the latest flagship models like OnePlus 13. We’ve brought you a review of this model on our sister site China Planet—you’ll find the link here.

From comparing the specs of the European and Indian / Chinese version, it turns out that Xiaomi either wants to make a pretty penny off you, or effectively tells Europeans to “go to hell,” and the Redmi Note series is slowly losing its original point. For those given selling prices, you’ll definitely find better devices—that’s a fact.

Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G: “The cheaper” model is just as bad

If you think you’ll save money by choosing the cheaper model, think again. With Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G, the situation repeats itself. The global customer only gets average specs for an overpriced price.

The cheaper global model is disappointing.

Once again, the global model offers an even worse camera with a resolution of 200 MPx and an aperture of f/1.7. The compromise also hits the battery: we only got older Li-Ion battery technology, with a slightly increased capacity of 5110 mAh.

Selling prices in Europe? Nonsense—on the baseline model with 8 GB RAM, it’s just a few cents below 400 €. Want 12 GB? Then pay almost 450 €.

Meanwhile the Indian version—just like the “Plus” model—comes with a different 50 MPx Sony Light Fusion 800 camera with f/1.5 aperture, plus the newest silicon-carbon technology in the battery cells, and also with a higher capacity of up to 5500 mAh. And the price in India? 26,999 Indian rupees for the 8+256 GB version, which is €305 in conversion.

As long-time Xiaomi fans, we’re really disappointed

What do you think about this “strategy” by Xiaomi for Europe? We’ve been Xiaomi fans since the Xiaomi Mi 2 model from 2012, and we’re honestly disappointed by what the company is doing here.

Although it’s not the first time Xiaomi has introduced phones for Europe with different specs, the differences have never been this huge—especially not for the brand’s best-selling models.
