One day after the presentation of Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro, we already know for sure that both smartphones are equipped with a top-notch display. Its manufacturer is the Chinese company Huaxing Optoelectronics, and huge sums of money were spent on its development.

Supporting local component manufacturers pays off

It’s no secret that leading Chinese mobile phone manufacturers are trying to tap into the potential of local component manufacturers. Xiaomi is doing it as an example here and invests considerable funds in supporting those local brands.

Now it’s harvesting the rewards in the form of a premium AMOLED panel, with which the company could outfit its two flagship Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro models.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun revealed that the curved AMOLED displays are actually made by the local manufacturer Huaxing Optoelectronics. The brand is a subsidiary of the TCL group. The company’s manager also revealed that they spent enormous sums on R&D of the display so that the final result would meet the requirements.

It’s among the top

A new super AMOLED panel that’s installed in the Mi 10 has a 6.7-inch diagonal with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and an aspect ratio of 19.5 : 9. It’s the first Chinese curved AMOLED screen with a perforation – meaning a hole for the placement of the front camera. Its diameter is only 2.6 mm, which is less than, for example, on competing Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10.

The display is manufactured using a technology called DOT (Direct On-cell Touch – direct touch on the cell), which has a touch sensor built into the display’s enclosure with a thin layer. Other manufacturing technologies place a touch film on the panel. The advantage of DOT technology is a thinner display and lower manufacturing costs.

It’s expected that similar display technology will also be used in this year’s new Apple smartphones.

High values for almost all parameters

Another great feature of this AMOLED panel is the TCL Pearl Arrangement (pearl arrangement) technology for pixels. The screen brightness is 800 nits (HBM) and 500 nits (typ), while the maximum possible brightness is more than 1100 nits on both smartphone versions.

In addition, the display has a color gamut of DCI-P3 100% and a contrast ratio of 5 000 000: 1.

The panel manufacturer also had to deal with perfect display smoothness. They achieved this by using a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a sampling rate of 180 Hz. We’ll also mention support for DC Dimming and HDR10+.

Thanks to its properties, this innovative AMOLED panel earned a TÜV Rheinland certificate, which means low blue light emission and almost no flickering.

And last but not least, we can’t fail to mention the very thin bezels that the display managed to fit into. The bottom part of the bezel, the so-called chin, is only 3.32 mm thick, which is a nice drop compared to the Mi 9 model with 3.9 mm. The other parts of the bezel are only 1.8 mm thick.

According to the specifications, the display in the Mi 10 series is a real gem, and we’re already looking forward to the day when we can see it live.
