The latest leaks point to major changes compared to previous generations. Instead of a periscope telephoto lens, the manufacturer decided to focus on the main sensor, whose quality is expected to improve significantly. On top of that, we can look forward to a huge battery, narrower display bezels, and the newest Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chip.

Camera changes: Goodbye periscope, hello QV50Q

According to an Indian insider Kartikeya Singha, Xiaomi has decided to change the original plan and won’t place a periscope telephoto lens in the compact body of the new Xiaomi 16. Instead, it will use the well-known ISOCELL JN5 sensor from the Xiaomi 15 model, which handles 2.6x optical zoom and macro shots. While it may look like a step back, the main sensor has received a significant upgrade.

The novelty will be a 50 MPx sensor, the Omnivision QV50Q, with a 1/1.3″ size, promising significantly better dynamics thanks to LOFIC technology for higher-quality HDR photos. Autofocus should also be improved, along with overall shooting efficiency. However, the secondary cameras aren’t expected to see any major changes.

An innovative next-gen display

The Xiaomi 16 lineup is expected to bring a top-tier next-generation OLED display that could rank among the best on the market. The manufacturer is testing two breakthrough technologies at once—Real RGB OLED and Dual-Layer Tandem OLED.

The first one replaces the traditional PenTile layout with an even distribution of red, green, and blue subpixels, resulting in a sharper image, more accurate colors, and a lower risk of image burn-in. In particular, the blue subpixels—which typically wear out faster—are said to be more efficient and more durable in this setup.

The Tandem OLED solution combines two layers of OLED panels, enabling higher brightness with lower power consumption. The result is not only better readability in sunlight, but also improved energy efficiency and a longer display lifespan. Combined, these technologies set a new standard for flagship smartphones and confirm that Xiaomi wants to compete with the very best in the display arena.

As for the specs, it should be a 6.36-inch display with LIPO technology, which will make its bezels even thinner. This is an important upgrade for fans of compact, stylish phones. The 1.5K resolution will deliver flagship-level sharpness, and a high refresh rate of at least 120 Hz should be a given.

The device is expected to feature an integrated 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which should make phone unlocking even more reliable regardless of moisture or dirt.

Huge battery and fast charging

One of Xiaomi 16’s biggest advantages should be its massive 7000 mAh battery, far exceeding typical flagship capacities. Although some leaks mention a slightly more conservative 6500 mAh figure, it’s still a truly exceptional value for a compact smartphone.

Support for 100 W wired charging and up to 80 W wireless charging will make it a real endurance and convenience champion for topping up. Combined with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset and the HyperOS 3 system, it will be a very powerful device ready for everyday use as well as demanding tasks.

Will a transparent design from the Mi 8 Explorer or Mi 10 Ultra era make a comeback?

Another interesting update hinted at by the reliable leaker Digital Chat Station is a transparent design for one of the Xiaomi 16 series models. In the style of the iconic Mi 8 Explorer, Mi 9 Transparent Edition, or Mi 10 Ultra, we could see the return of a clear back cover—this time made from transparent fiberglass.

It’s a unique design feature that could appeal to fans of a stylish, futuristic look.

We also tested the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition with its distinctive transparent design.

Xiaomi is thus likely trying to revive a legend and prepare an edition with an exclusive look that once captivated the entire tech world. The Transparent Edition of Xiaomi 16 is said to be in the works, and if these plans come to fruition, the lineup would once again offer one of the most eye-catching designs on the market.
