Xiaomi’s fastest 100 W charging is not ready yet. Here are the reasons

Back in March / březnu of last year, Xiaomi first revealed that it’s working on its next major technological innovation in the form of the world’s fastest 100 W charging for smartphones. According to the manufacturer, a smartphone with a 4000 mAh battery should be fully charged in just 17 minutes.

We haven’t heard much about the Xiaomi Super Charge Turbo technology since then, but development is still ongoing.

Several obstacles are in the way

Lu Weibing, the head representative of the Redmi brand, posted a statement on his Weibo profile under pressure from fans, explaining what stage the development of Xiaomi Super Charge Turbo is at and what obstacles stand in their way. It’s exactly the Redmi brand that took on the task of developing this technology.

In his post, he says the technology isn’t ready yet. In the development process, they need to solve these 5 complicated technological obstacles:

  1. Battery capacity loss: The Redmi director talks about an even greater loss of battery capacity caused by such fast charging. It’s estimated that with 100 W charging, battery capacity loss is about 20% higher compared to fast charging 30 W PD. A 5,000 mAh battery would realistically deliver 4,000 mAh.
  2. Technological implementation: He didn’t reveal too much about this aspect, but said it requires an ultra-high-voltage charging scheme.
  3. Performance: The manufacturer has to solve the issue of making 100 W charging not only technically feasible, but also ensuring a long and sustainable charging time.
  4. Safety: Of course, in the design they must think about safety features to protect the mainboard and the battery, and prevent overcharging, overvoltage, etc.
  5. Combined charging: The company is also looking for the optimal path for multiple charging methods, meaning combining wired and wireless charging and ensuring mutual compatibility of the charging adapter.

We believe that developing this still unexplored technology definitely isn’t easy. However, Lu Weibing also stated that they’ve now reached the stage where 100 W Super Charge Turbo charging could move into serial production.

Xiaomi could achieve a world first

Even though the tech world is moving really fast, currently no other manufacturer has announced development of similarly fast charging for smartphones. The fastest charging with 65 W power currently developed by Chinese Oppo, which calls it SuperVOOC 2.0.

So far, this technology is included in their first commercially sold smartphone, the Oppo Reno Ace. The 4000 mAh battery recharges in just 30 minutes with this technology.

If Xiaomi manages to roll out 100 W charging into real-world operation this year, it’s almost certain they’ll achieve a major world first. We’re definitely rooting for them!
