The tech world has received the first concrete look at the upcoming smartphone Xiaomi 16 Pro Max. A leaked photo from the Chinese social network Weibo revealed the back of the device, bearing the model designation “P1S”.

And although Xiaomi is still officially silent, one detail from the photo immediately triggered comparisons with the competing iPhone 17 Pro Max — it’s a distinctive, square camera module that occupies a substantial portion of the upper back of the phone.
Bold camera module and new design elements
The biggest attention-grabber is the square rear camera module, which dominates the design of the back cover. This module houses the main sensors, complemented by secondary sensors placed outside the main circle — likely laser autofocus, depth sensors, or color temperature sensors.
A standout feature is also the built-in small display right inside the camera module. We’ve seen a similar solution with the legendary Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, and it looks like Xiaomi is bringing this element back again. The display could be used to show notifications, the time, or simple camera controls for selfie photos using the rear sensor. The rest of the back panel is made of a glossy surface typical of the brand’s flagships.
Confirmation of the leaked design
The credibility of this leak was also confirmed by the well-known Chinese insider Digital Chat Station, who shared a device diagram consistent with the photo. The arrangement of the sensors and the secondary display fully matches the design, which adds weight to the leak and confirms the likely direction Xiaomi is taking with its 16 uber series development.
Several tech fans have already created render images based on this picture, which match Xiaomi’s patents from the past few months.
Expected release date and estimated price
Xiaomi 16 Pro Max will be part of a broader series of “Xiaomi 16”, where we should also see the base model Xiaomi 16 and possibly even an Ultra version. Preliminary information suggests it will be unveiled on the Chinese domestic market towards the end of September, while the global version has not been confirmed yet.
The price of the device in China should be around 6999 yuan, which is approximately €850. Of course, this price applies to the Chinese market, and if the smartphone also makes it outside China, we’ll have to account for a higher amount.
While official information is still missing, the leaked images and diagrams already give us a pretty clear idea of what to expect from the Xiaomi 16 Pro Max. If these assumptions are confirmed, we can look forward to a significant design change and some interesting functional features.
