If you’ve noticed in the past few days that your phone behaves differently during an incoming call than usual, you’re not alone. Google has released an update to the Phone app that most Android devices use, including global Xiaomi models.

While technology keeps improving, users have a hard time getting used to new things. Many admit they don’t know how to accept a call— or even worse, they accidentally decline it when trying to accept it.
A new way to accept and reject calls
Until now, we were used to swiping up to accept a call, or swiping down to reject it. But the new version changes that system— to accept a call, you have to swipe right, and to reject it, swipe left.
Google claims it’s a more intuitive and natural gesture that better matches what we already know from other apps. Similarly, it works on iPhone, too. Based on reactions on forums and social media, it doesn’t seem intuitive at all.

Online, angry users are piling up, calling for the return of the old method. In groups like Xiaomi Family CZ/SK on Facebook, people are asking whether you can switch back to the original controls. Technically, yes—just uninstall updates for the Phone app. But along with that, you’ll also lose security patches, which isn’t an ideal long-term solution.

But Google didn’t bring just chaos. Along with the new system, there’s also the Calling Cards feature—visually enhanced contact profiles that show up during an incoming call. Imagine your friend calling you and, instead of a plain name, you see their photo across the whole display, complete with stylish type and colors. It’s Google’s answer to Contact Posters from iPhones, and you have to admit it has something going for it.
You can set up Calling Cards easily in the Contacts app—open the specific contact, choose the option to add a Calling Card, and then customize the photo, text, colors, and layout. It’s a small thing, but it makes calling feel much more personal and modern.
Even if the new call-accepting method initially annoys you, it’s more than likely that you’ll get used to it after a while. If you’re not happy, Google may have made your life a bit more complicated for the time being—but maybe that’s exactly a small step toward making our smartphone a little more “smart,” and helping us avoid unwanted picking up or rejecting calls when someone rings.
