Quick summary

  • Five times faster than free air drying.
  • The mesh is pulled out toward the air outlet, creating a semi-enclosed zone.
  • It holds 45 kg; the bars extend up to 2.4 m.
  • In China, it costs 3,199 yuan, under 430 euros.

Xiaomi has introduced the Mijia Smart Clothes Dryer 3 Max, a motorized laundry dryer suspended from the ceiling. Don’t look for a drum or a condenser. You hang laundry on it just like on a regular clothes dryer, and then only part of the laundry gets warm air blowing from the ceiling. According to Xiaomi, it dries five times faster than if it just hung in the air. In China, it goes on sale starting October 9.

How does it all work?

The dryer has two main parts. On the ceiling there’s a flat cabinet only 9 cm thick, housing the motor, a heater with a fan, and a large light panel. Under it hangs the dryer itself on two scissor arms and steel cables. The motor lowers it by up to 1.3 m, then pulls it back up to the ceiling.

At first glance, it looks like a big ceiling light

The lower frame has telescopic bars that extend from 1.38 to 2.4 m. Shirts and T-shirts on hangers go onto the bars just like on any other clothes dryer. In the middle of the frame there’s a wrapped mesh that you pull out like a roller blind. Items are placed on it flat: kids’ clothing, underwear, socks, or silk scarves that would get stretched out on a hanger. When you don’t need the mesh, you roll it back into the frame.

Laundry is laid flat on the middle mesh

You start drying with warm air or disinfection in the app. The light panel on the ceiling first lowers slightly and shifts to the side. Behind it, the air outlet opens up with a width of 77 cm. The dryer then automatically lifts upward until the mesh is just under the air outlet. A semi-enclosed space forms around the laundry on the mesh; Xiaomi calls it the gentle drying zone. The warm air circulates around the laundry and doesn’t immediately leak into the whole room.

Hot air flows in the semi-enclosed zone

With a regular dryer, clothes hang vertically and air just passes by them. Here, the laundry lies horizontally directly under the stream of warm air. Xiaomi calls this a new feature across the entire Mijia lineup. In China, the company has registered three utility design patents for this solution.

Three modes and where the fivefold boost comes from

The heater has a power rating of 1,250 W, and there are three modes to choose from. Standard drying blows steadily the same warm air. Smart drying measures humidity and automatically adjusts the temperature. The third mode doesn’t heat at all—only a fan with a power draw of 10 W removes moisture. It’s suitable for delicate fabrics or rainy days when you don’t want laundry on the balcony to dry. Modes can only be switched in the Mi Home app; you can’t do it with the included controller.

A fivefold speed-up was measured by the Haoyidian laboratory, which is behind most of the numbers on the product page. It compared the gentle drying zone versus drying freely in the air. The drying speed was measured by how quickly water decreased from the bottom laundry. That’s why the figure refers to smaller items on the mesh, not the full dryer with comforters. The wide air outlet also blows on clothes on hangers, but Xiaomi doesn’t provide a speed figure for them.

Five zones and forty-five kilos

The load capacity is 45 kg. According to Xiaomi, you can fit 80 pieces of clothing at once, or two thick comforters, plus 30 to 50 pairs of socks. The area is divided into five zones. In the middle there’s a mesh for drying laid flat; around it there’s regular hanging; on one end there’s space for pillows, and on the other end an expanded section for additional hanging. Under the frame, there are also two separate bars for comforters and blankets. Four dividers together provide 16 clips for small items.

The frame lifts with a quiet DC motor. According to Xiaomi, it has lasted 6,000 cycles under full load of 45 kg in testing. The clothes dryer hangs on stainless-steel cables with a 2 mm diameter, braided from six strands of 19 wires each. The frame is made from an aluminum alloy of the 6000 series, with a powder-coated finish. Compared to the older Mijia Smart Clothes Dryer Pro model, it uses about 3 kg more aluminum. Noise level is rated by the manufacturer at up to 65 dB.

Fuses against overload and impact

The motor monitors current draw. If you overload the dryer, it will stop, move to a safe height, and will only go back up once you remove part of the laundry. If it hits an obstacle while moving, it stops immediately and then continues operating normally after the obstacle is removed.

When moving upward, the dryer normally stops slightly below the ceiling. It fully retracts only after you roll up the net. If it bumps into something while being pulled out, it will automatically move downward.

A light that turns on automatically

The bottom of the housing is formed by a light panel with a 42-inch diagonal, designed to illuminate the entire balcony. Color temperature can be adjusted from 2,700 to 5,700 K, with smooth brightness control. The color rendering index is Ra 95, and the panel belongs to the lowest risk group for blue light RG0. According to Xiaomi, it also doesn’t visibly flicker.

The light turns on automatically when motion is detected

When you approach the clothes dryer, the light turns on by itself and switches off after a delay once you leave. This is handled by a radar sensor operating at 24 GHz. Xiaomi notes in the listing that the function was verified in a laboratory. Laundry that covers the sensor, or interference in the surroundings, may cause the light to turn on unnecessarily or not turn on at all.

Antibacterial mesh and plasma

The mesh contains an antibacterial additive. Against E. coli and golden staph, it achieved over 99% effectiveness in testing. After the disinfection is turned on, the air outlet begins releasing plasma ions in a high concentration. These are intended to kill bacteria and remove odors. The Chinese home-appliance research institute CHEARI has awarded the dryer a certification for appliances for households with babies.

Mi Home, XiaoAI, and a washing machine

You can control it in the Mi Home app, by voice through XiaoAI, or with the remote controller included in the box. The clothes dryer supports Xiaomi HyperOS Connect, so it can connect with other Mijia appliances. When you run the Mijia washing machine, the dryer automatically moves down so you can hang the laundry right away.

In the app, you can also set the height to which the clothes dryer should lower. That way, a shorter person won’t have to reach up with their arms, and a taller person won’t need to bend over. A timer also helps. For example, the dryer can automatically lower itself at 7:00 AM so that your laundry dries during the day, and then at 6:00 PM it raises up to the ceiling so the laundry doesn’t get damp overnight.

Installation requires a concrete ceiling

The dryer is fixed to the ceiling with four M8 anchors. The ceiling must be concrete and able to carry the load. Xiaomi won’t install it on prefabricated ceiling panels—if the situation is unclear, a technician decides on-site. There must be a power supply in the ceiling with 220 V, for example an outlet prepared for a light fixture.

The balcony should be at least 2,6 m long, 0,9 m wide, and 2,3 to 3 m high. If the ceiling soffit is deeper than 40 cm, the ceiling height is higher than 3 m, or the ceiling slope is more than 5°, Xiaomi does not recommend installation. The dryer can also be recessed into the soffit; the cutout should be 160 × 55 × 11 cm. When folded, it measures 137,9 × 44,6 × 9 cm. Total power consumption is 1 380 W, of which 80 W goes to the motor and 50 W to the light.

In China, Xiaomi’s technician installs it free for the first time; the next installation costs 130 yuan. Without an extra fee, they also dismount the old clothes dryer or a light fixture. Xiaomi provides a three-year warranty for the entire unit.

Not planned for Europe yet

The recommended price in China is 3,199 yuan, which is a little under €430 after conversion. With a China subsidy, it dropped during the initial sales to 2,699 yuan, or about €360. But that subsidy doesn’t apply to us. In the first month of sales, Xiaomi includes a thermometer with a humidity sensor, Mijia 3 mini. Two colors are available: white and polar gray.

Outside China, the device isn’t sold yet, and with ceiling clothes dryers, that probably won’t change. Installation requires a solid mounting into a concrete ceiling and an electrical connection, which is an issue in rented apartments. The older model, the Mijia Smart Clothes Dryer, reached us via Chinese shops. Just plan for installation on your own, without a Xiaomi technician, and with an app that isn’t in Slovak.
