Netflix will look better on your Xiaomi TV than ever before: These are the benefits of the AV1 codec

21. November 2021 3 min read 0 comments

The AV1 codec is a very important element, especially when it comes to playing back multimedia content. In today’s article, we’ll show you the benefits of this codec and how you can achieve, on your Xiaomi TV, for example, a higher-quality Netflix.

Xiaomi and the AV1 Codec

It’s no secret that Netflix, as a popular streaming platform, is slightly lagging behind in terms of high content quality. This is mainly about Ultra HD content, compared to competitors like Disney + or Amazon Prime Video. Still, the platform knows about this issue and wants to actively address it in the place where these compromises are caused. And that is the codec that’s used.

The company itself announced that it will start using the AV1 codec on TVs, i.e., where users most often watch high-quality content. Testing of this codec has already taken place on Android devices and brought benefits in terms of data savings as well as picture quality.

Better quality than with the H.265 codec

Many users asked for the popular platform to use the H.265. codec for its high-quality content. However, Netflix decided that the most suitable choice will be the AV1 codec. It can increase efficiency by up to 40% using HECV. technology. This means that at the same bitrate, the video will have much higher picture quality than with the current H.264. codec.

However, the solution still has a few “buts.” At the moment, it won’t be possible to use this codec for HDR content. The bad news is also that only a small number of TVs are currently compatible and capable of decoding the AV1 codec.

These are Xiaomi TVs that support the AV1 codec

Luckily, in the list of TVs that support the AV1 codec, there are already several models from the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi. Specifically, these are:

  • Xiaomi Mi TV P1 43″
  • Xiaomi Mi TV P1 50″
  • Xiaomi Mi TV P1 55″
  • Xiaomi Mi TV Q1 75″

On the other hand, if your TV doesn’t support this codec, you just need it to support the extension. For example, the new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max codec AV1 already supports it. According to available information, the upcoming Chromecast version should support this codec as well. In addition, all Android TV devices put up for sale after 31. March of this year must be able to decode this codec.

Naturally, encoding all Netflix content into the AV1 codec will take some time. However, the company has already confirmed that it has started carrying out this process for some of its most popular titles, such as Money Heist / La Casa de Papel.
