The interesting piece of information is that this technology is currently available only for OLED displays. We owe this success to the team of smart people from the Research and Development department at Redmi.

Beginnings of sensors

With the development of mobile phones, there were increasing demands for a bigger display without bezels, notches, or buttons. You can’t stop progress and manufacturers had to adapt to the new trend.

The devices still needed biometric protection. So some manufacturers placed a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, while others, like Apple, worked on a biometric face sensor.

The breakthrough came when it was possible to place a fingerprint sensor directly under the display, specifically it was OLED displays. This small miracle led to a big increase in OLED display sales, which, however, was a major blow to LCD display sales.

An evolution for cheaper devices

According to the latest reports from the Chinese social network Weibo, this technological miracle was achieved by Redmi using IR radiation through film materials that are highly light-permeable. This means that the light penetration increased rapidly, enabling it to pass through the screen. As a result, the fingerprint reader is able to scan fingerprints even in an LCD display.

Ultimately, placing a fingerprint sensor under the LCD display can mean a rapid increase in LCD display sales. These displays are typical especially for cheaper devices like lower and mid-range models.

We assume that if everything goes smoothly, even cheaper devices will be able to use this piece of technology, which will definitely please a large number of users of budget models. You can see how it all works in the video above.
