Redmi K20 Pro official: A groundbreaking smartphone in the price-to-performance ratio

28. May 2019 9 min read 0 comments

Today will definitely go down in Redmi history. After all those months, weeks, and days of anticipation, we finally got it. At its largest Redmi event to date, the company introduced the much-awaited flagship — – Redmi K20 Pro.

Right from the start, we can talk about it as a groundbreaking smartphone for the price-to-performance ratio. Just as Redmi’s brand director, Lu Weibing, promised, that’s exactly what happened. Redmi K20 Pro is a true king of the price-to-performance ratio. The company also calls it a “flagship killer 2.0,” directly targeting OnePlus brand models.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Redmi K20 Pro.

Pop-up camera

The construction of the Redmi K20 Pro won’t surprise us at all, since the design and the core features were already revealed before the unveiling. So the smartphone comes with an almost bezel-less display that has no notch or hole.

The front camera is placed in a sliding mechanism, similar to what you get in the much more expensive OnePlus 7 Pro. Redmi states that the mechanism can handle 300,000 slide-outs / slide-ins. With 100 slide-outs per day, it’s nearly 10 years of use.

According to the manufacturer, the slide-out takes just 0.8 seconds, and the camera has a similar drop protection to OnePlus—where it automatically slides back in. The camera lens itself is protected by a very durable sapphire glass cover that resists scratches. There are also 6 sound effects for the camera sliding.

It’s quite surprising that a smartphone in this price category offers a complicated mechanism for a pop-up camera. And honestly, it’s also pretty admirable that the manufacturer managed to do it at this price.

The construction of the Redmi K20 Pro is made mainly of glass. The back glass panel has a very interesting color finish that we haven’t seen in smartphones so far. Redmi calls it something like a “flame design.” Different angles of light create an incredibly captivating 3D effect, in the style of fire.

It will be available in carbon, red and blue versions. The overall dimensions of the body are 156.7 x 74.3 x 8.8 mm and the weight is 191 grams.

Nearly bezel-less AMOLED

From the dimensions alone, it’s clear that the Redmi K20 Pro isn’t any kind of dwarf. The front is covered by a 6.39-inch display with truly minimal bezels. Considering the display size, Redmi managed to keep the overall dimensions fairly reasonable. The display takes up to 91.9% of the front. The bottom chin is still there, but it’s only 3.8 mm.

The display for this smartphone is made by Samsung, and it’s a popular AMOLED panel that users love despite the higher color saturation. You’ll also love the 7th generation optical in-display fingerprint sensor. This is the latest generation of this technology. The sensor is 10% faster and 30% more accurate than the previous generation.

The display has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a more or less standard FullHD+ resolution, i.e. 2340 x 1080 pixels. Even though Redmi built its model against the OnePlus 7 Pro from the start, the K20 Pro display still has a classic 60 Hz refresh rate.

However, that’s not really a disadvantage—in this price range, we wouldn’t expect anything else. The display offers a contrast ratio of 60000:1, a maximum brightness of 600 nits, and support for HDR technology.

That means support for colored backgrounds. There’s also a new feature called “DC Dimming”. Xiaomi has been enabling this feature recently across all of its models equipped with AMOLED displays.

The hardware of the flagship phone

From the very beginning, we already knew which processor the Redmi K20 Pro would be powered by. The octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with a clock speed of 2.84 GHz, Kryo 485 cores built on a 7 nm manufacturing process, plus the Adreno 640 GPU. In other words, the best you can have in a smartphone in 2019.

The processor is supported by LPDDR4x-type operational RAM memory with capacities of 6 or 8 GB. Internal UFS 2.1 storage is available in three versions – 64 / 128 / 256 GB. A microSD card slot would be something we’d expect in vain—Xiaomi has completely removed them from its flagship models.

The Redmi K20 Pro supports the Black Shark-style joystick

We’ll stick with performance for a moment. The K20 Pro comes with the gaming mode Game Turbo 2.0, which improves the gaming user experience. Intelligent algorithms work to deliver the best performance and smooth gameplay thanks to FPS optimization, along with instant display responsiveness. Redmi has been boasting about faster touch responsiveness than the Huawei P30 Pro or Vivo IQOO.

For gamers in particular, the smartphone features an 8-layer graphite heat-dissipation technology that evenly reduces the temperature across the entire device and significantly improves heat-dissipation efficiency.

Triple 48 MPx camera

The back of the new Redmi K20 Pro houses a trio of lenses. The primary wide-angle sensor, the Sony IMX 586, offers a resolution of 48 MPx and an aperture of f/1.75. Next up is the 13 MPx ultra-wide sensor with a field of view up to 124.8° and an aperture of f/2.4. For the third one, there’s an 8 MPx telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.4 and 2x optical zoom.

The camera is equipped with fast laser autofocus and supports a super night mode. It can record 4K video at 30 and 60 fps, FullHD video at 60 fps, and even super slow-motion video at 960 fps.

The front camera has a resolution of 20 MPx, f/2.2 aperture, 0.8μm pixel size and records FullHD video. An interesting feature of the front camera is a kind of panoramic selfie photo. There’s also plenty of AI to enhance your “selfies”.

This is how the panoramic selfie photo works

4000 mAh AI-powered battery

Another key spec of the Redmi K20 is the battery. It’s already been confirmed that it will get a solid 4000 mAh capacity, which has become something of an icon for Redmi smartphones. So it can’t be missing from the flagship either.

Redmi developers also worked hard on the software side to help deliver even longer battery life. The battery will be supported by artificial intelligence for intelligent power-saving optimization. The algorithm can intelligently control the energy consumption of apps and games.

To optimize the battery, Redmi also created a set of so-called AI scenes for different usage scenarios. For example, if you’re using chat apps, social networks, and reading on your smartphone, the screen backlight will automatically adapt—making it not only more comfortable for your eyes, but also saving battery.

When you sleep, the phone automatically switches to sleep mode, carefully controls the number of apps running in the background, and ensures almost no energy is consumed. According to Redmi’s brand director, extreme battery optimization makes the Redmi K20 a battery-life hard-to-beat smartphone.

A large battery is complemented by fast charging of up to 27 W. The battery needs just half an hour on the charger to reach 58%. A full charge takes 73 minutes. Charging is done via the modern USB Type-C connector.

Great audio with 3,5 mm jack

Even before the presentation, we knew that the Redmi K20 Pro would come with a slowly fading 3.5 mm jack. And that’s exactly what happened. What’s more, the smartphone is Hi-Res Audio certified, which means it delivers high-quality sound to users.

Besides headphone audio quality, the speaker is also a focus area for the developers. The new Redmi K20 will be equipped with the largest ultra-linear 1217 speaker, which is equivalent to a 0.9cc speaker, similar to the Xiaomi Mi 9.

This time, the volume has been significantly improved, and the effect during gaming is truly exceptional. It’s compared to the performance of external Bluetooth speakers. Redmi is confident that thanks to the high-quality speaker (or headphone) sound, the new model will be very popular.

NFC and dual GPS

A chip from the latest generation, the SN100 series, is used. It’s the same type of module found in devices such as the iPhone XS. The action speed of this chip is up to 30% higher compared to older NFC types.

After signing in to your Xiaomi account, all NFC configurations from your previous phone will be imported into your new Redmi smartphone. Of course, as long as you had one like that before.

It also comes with a dual-frequency GPS module. This type of module isn’t new. It was used for the first time in Xiaomi Mi 8 and has gradually been adopted by other phones from different brands. The advantage of this module is a more accurate signal and a more stable connection.

Older GPS modules worked on a single frequency and determined your location using satellite signals from the L1 category. Its signal, for example, is often lost in areas surrounded by tall buildings, and the location isn’t very accurate.

Dual-frequency GPS, together with this signal, also uses L5 category satellites for positioning. Location targeting is much more accurate and the connection isn’t interrupted.

Like a Killer!

Pricing is probably the most eagerly awaited feature of the new Redmi K20 Pro. Dubbed king in the price-to-performance ratio—or even a flagship killer 2.0—its prices successfully confirm these titles. Just see for yourself:

Redmi K20 Pro with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB storage — 2499 yuan, ~325 € / 8400 CZK

Redmi K20 Pro with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage — 2599 yuan, ~340 € / 8700 CZK

Redmi K20 Pro with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage — 2799 yuan, ~365 € / 9400 CZK

Redmi K20 Pro with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage — 2999 yuan, ~390 € / 10 040 CZK

However, we must keep in mind that even if these prices are confirmed, they are still prices intended exclusively for the Chinese market and for residents of China. We’re already used to the fact that we have to count on higher prices for Europe—and it won’t be any different this time, either.
