Redmi Note 8 Pro was just officially unveiled. Just moments ago, the Redmi brand’s press conference ended, where among other things the new smartphone Redmi Note 8 Pro was presented. With Xiaomi or Redmi, it happened for the first time that two smartphones from the same product line were unveiled in a single calendar year.
Let’s take a look now at what the newly unveiled Redmi Note 8 Pro really brings.
The design grabs attention—plus water resistance
The phone looks incredibly luxurious in all its color variants. Whether it’s pearl white, jade green, or also dark Grey. The color variants were inspired by the colors of the sea and glaciers. The curved glass back adds to the luxurious look. It’s 3D quadrangular glass, made using a demanding technological process.
Redmi Note 8 Pro measures 161.3 x 76.4 x 8.8 mm and weighs 199 grams. The front is made by a large IPS LCD display, which accounts for up to 91.4 % of the phone’s front area with a cutout for the front camera. We’ll get back to it.
On the back, in the middle, there are three camera lenses in a row from top to bottom, and below them a fingerprint sensor. To the right of them you’ll find an on-flash LED, and under it the lens for the fourth camera.
The device frame is made of plastic in the phone’s color, and on it—traditionally—there are the volume buttons, the power on/off button, the dual SIM card tray, and a memory card slot. Down below, a somewhat unconventional opening for the 3,5 mm audio jack is placed. The company also includes a USB Type-C connector.
A pleasant surprise is IP52 certification, meaning resistance only to splashing water or rain. The manufacturer declares protected connectors and slots that come with increased insulation. Overall, the new Note 8 Pro’s construction also has enhanced drop resistance. Xiaomi shared videos showing how it tests the durability of the new device in an actually interesting way.
We got the videos—so you can have a laugh. 🙂
The display has grown a bit
The display in the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.53-inch diagonal, which is a bit more than the 6.3″ in Note 7 Pro. At the top in the middle, there’s a cutout for the front camera. It has a resolution of 20 MPx. The display resolution is 1080 x 2340 pixels.
The display protection is Gorilla Glass 5 and the screen has a TÜV Rheinland certificate for limiting harmful blue light.
MediaTek shouldn’t disappoint
In the new Note 8 Pro, Redmi installed a new Mediatek processor, specifically the Helio G90T. It’s the first phone in the world with this chipset, and it’s classed among high-performance gaming processors. It has eight cores: 2 x Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.05 GHz and 6 x Cortex-A55 clocked at 2 GHz. The Helio G90T uses the ARM Mali-G76 3EEMC4 graphics chip clocked at 800 MHz.
This combination is directly ideal for gamers, which is also confirmed by the added gaming mode Game Turbo 2.0. The score in the AnTuTu benchmark reached 283 333 points. That means it outperforms the Snapdragon 710, 730 and 810 processors, which achieved lower scores.
Such performance also requires proper cooling, specifically liquid-based. It has worked well in multiple devices focused on gamers. The temperature should be reduced by 4 – 6 degrees Celsius. In the “Redmi Note” device price category, this is definitely an interesting extra element.
The processor offers Hyper Engine technology for better communication between the smartphone and the network, and it also offers Dual WiFi technology—so you can connect to two Wi‑Fi networks at the same time. The smartphone also supports connecting a gaming controller known from Black Shark models, which you can buy separately for 179 yuan, i.e. 23 € / 580 kč.
As for RAM, versions with 6 GB and 8 GB RAM will be available. This is currently the fastest type of RAM: LPDDR4x. The internal storage based on a fast UFS 2.1 chip will offer capacities of 64 and 128 GB.
The camera is a special class.
On the back of the phone there are 4 camera sensors and a dual LED flash diode. It’s the first phone in the world that has a 64 MPx sensor and three more cameras.
The primary sensor is the 64 MPx Samsung GW1 with an aperture of f/1,7. The sensor delivers photos in an amazing 9248 x 6936 px resolution. Sensor size is 1/1.7″ and it is 38% larger than the previous 48 MPx sensors. Pixel size is 1,6 um. For comparison, the sensor is the same size as the one in Huawei P30 Pro flagship model, which belongs to the photography elite.
A larger sensor size means better light throughput, resulting in better photos in poor lighting conditions. The sensor also brings technologies such as Isocell Plus, Smart ISO, or Hybrid 3D HDR—HDR powered by hardware.
Photos from Redmi Note 8 deliver double the resolution—8K , 7, 7x higher than 4K UHD resolution—and even up to 25-times exceeding the resolution of 1080p FHD.
Second in line is an ultra-wide 8 MPx with a viewing angle of 120°. Under it there is placed a macro camera with a resolution of 2 MPx and a focal length of 2 cm. The rear quad camera array is completed by a 2 MPx depth sensor.
A bigger battery—plus NFC is included.
Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a 4500 mAh battery supporting fast charging at 18 W. Charging the battery fully should take no more than 2 hours.
The new model will also come with an NFC module, an infrared port, a 3,5 mm audio jack and a superlinear speaker. The fingerprint sensor is located on the back.
Prices start at pleasant values
Redmi Note 8 Pro in the 6 GB / 64 GB version is coming in at a price of 1399 yuan, which in conversion is 176 € / 4545 kč. The version with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage should hit the market with a price of 1599 yuan, which in conversion is approximately 200 € / 5200 kč. The version with 8 GB / 128 GB storage is expected to be sold for 1799 yuan, which is about 226 € / 5850 kč.
