In a recent article about the arrival of MIUI 13 on our website, we informed you that from November 5th to November 7th a developer conference is taking place in homegrown China, where—besides software—hardware technological breakthroughs are also unveiled.
The latest one, according to available reports, is a retractable telescopic camera, thanks to which the quality of the resulting photos and videos will be significantly improved. Xiaomi has released an official video and information about this new technological advancement.
Retractable telescopic camera from Xiaomi:
As you can see in the video above, the company developed its own telescopic lens, similar to those found in compact cameras. According to the statements of the development team responsible for this technology, the entire lens extension process will be carried out very quickly.
The main reason why the company is working on something like this at all is to improve the resulting photos and video. Although no shots have been shown yet, as long as we trust the manufacturer’s words, we have a lot to look forward to.
Significantly better light transmission and improved stabilization
We’re set to get two major upgrades. The first is a higher maximum brightness, increased by as much as 300% thanks to the new super-large aperture. That means you’ll be able to capture images with plenty of detail even on a dark night. There’s also no shortage of more accurate depth of field adjustment.
The second bold improvement is the absorption of unwanted motion and shakes by up to 20%. With higher stability, you’ll get a nicer, sharper photo that’s packed with details exactly where you want it.

This new retractable lens really looks great. It’s awesome to see that manufacturers aren’t just going the conservative route—they keep experimenting in every way possible. No word yet on when and in which smartphone this new camera will show up.
What do you think of the new telescopic camera design? Would you buy a smartphone with a retractable lens? Feel free to leave your thoughts, impressions, and observations in the discussion below the article.
