The Chinese manufacturer is gearing up to launch its new ultra-flagship as early as December 25, and based on the first materials, it’s clear this will be one of the most ambitious photo phones of the year.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra: fewer changes on the outside, bigger changes inside
At first glance, the design stays true to the predecessor, but take a closer look and you’ll notice several subtle tweaks. The body has rounder corners, which should improve ergonomics and the feel in your hand. The massive camera module remains the dominant feature on the back, but the layout of the sensors is new and cleaner. Xiaomi clearly opted for evolution over revolution — and for the Ultra model, that makes perfect sense.
An interesting change is the move to a triple-camera setup. While Xiaomi 15 Ultra had four rear cameras, the new model goes with a smaller number of cameras, but with significantly more powerful sensors. The main role should be played by a 1-inch sensor from the new generation, paired with a 200 MPx periscope telephoto lens with optical zoom and Leica APO optics.
A camera built as the main weapon
Xiaomi confirms that the Ultra series is primarily about photography. The Leica collaboration continues, and the first official shots show natural colors, high dynamic range, and no pointless artificial scene brightening. The new main sensor Omnivision OV50X with LOFIC technology is designed to handle contrast-heavy scenes significantly better than its predecessor, while the telephoto lens will go up against the best solutions on the market.
Under the hood, you can look forward to Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which means absolute top-tier performance and efficiency. The battery is also expected to be a big leap, with a capacity of up to 6 800 mAh, plus 100 W fast wired charging. On paper, this looks like a combo that should handle even demanding photo shooting and video all day without a hitch.
Colors, the date, and what’s next
In China, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will launch in three colors — black, white, and a striking Starry Green that’s already getting the most attention. The official unveiling will take place on December 25, 2025, and before that date we’ll likely see more teasers, photo samples, and technical details.
Xiaomi with the 17 Ultra model isn’t aiming only at the brand’s fans, but straight at the throne among photo phones. If the confirmed specs translate into real-world performance, we’re in for one of the most exciting smartphones of the year.
