Xiaomi has a new patent for smartphone cameras that talks about mirror-level zoom

Our favorite Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has secured its new patent, which is focused on the world of mobile photography. It talks about zooming at mirror-level, which could significantly help with the final results.

Variable focal length on a smartphone?

Most leading manufacturers offer software settings for different focal lengths to get the best results on a smartphone. This usually works really well, but when you change lenses, you have to use digital zoom unless you reach your preferred focal length. In photography, this is a standard solution. However, in video it can cause blur as well as stuttering.

In the past, we could see a kind of experiment in connecting a smartphone with a digital compact camera. Samsung presented it under the K Zoom and S4 Zoom branding, offering a lens with a variable focal length.

The Galaxy K Zoom model offered a 35mm sensor and 10x optical zoom, with an equivalent result to a 24 – 240 mm lens. For an eight-year-old device, that’s an excellent result. But there’s a catch: the size.

Samsung, however, didn’t continue its “Zoom” series, and the main problem was precisely the extreme size of the sensor, which, together with the zoom technology, left less room for the battery.

Something similar was also attempted by Sony with the Xperia 1 IV smartphone, which offers a variable focal length. It can optically zoom in by 3.5 – 5.2x. That may seem small, but compared to Samsung, this Japanese manufacturer has the advantage. Xperia has, in fact, a similar thickness and size to other “standard” smartphones.

Xiaomi cameras and mirror-level zoom

Now Xiaomi is up next. A new patent reveals that the company will use one larger camera sensor with integrated variable focal length. That means there won’t be any ultra-wide lens or telephoto lens on the back.

In the image below, you can take a look at the primary camera lens mentioned above, which Xiaomi describes in its new patent. Of course, there’s no other available information yet about a specific device. It will likely be another model in the lineup for mobile photography fans, similar to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which impressed with its up to a 1″ sensor.
