The new flagship model from the Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi MIX 4, will offer a truly special wide-angle camera in its equipment. It can take photos without edge distortion.

In recent years, ultra-wide cameras have become increasingly popular in our smartphones. When it comes to the benefits, the ultra-wide lens offers a larger field of view, so you can fit more surrounding space into your photo. The image is richer in depth, which you’ll appreciate, for example, when shooting taller subjects.
However, the ultra-wide sensor also has its downside: slight image distortion. Traditional smartphone sensors use mainly symmetrical aspherical lenses with fixed curvature. These can cause overall distortion of up to 20%, which you’ll notice especially when looking at the edges of photos.
To correct these shots, devices usually use anti-distortion algorithms from the manufacturers. The correction, however, usually requires cropping part of the image. The problem is that after cropping, the ultra-wide shot will be less wide—paradoxically, given the primary function of this photo sensor.
Smart Fusion: 120° sharp shots without image distortion
This issue was also looked at by the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, and they tried to eliminate image distortion in their new flagship smartphone Xiaomi MIX 4. The key to success is improved hardware. Specifically, it’s a free-form ultra-wide lens. The freely shaped lens surface is more flexible and can calculate aberration in the field of view more precisely.
Each point of the image is adjusted one by one, creating a unique curvature without cropping by a software algorithm. Thanks to that, it’s possible to create 120-degree shots without distortion with a wide field of view. The hardware upgrade also brings higher image quality—the resulting shot is wider, and in the true sense of the word, “ultra-wide.”
Also important is the Smart Fusion feature, which creates a sharp center of the shot as well. After selecting the ultra-wide camera, it and the primary sensor start taking photos simultaneously. These shots are then stitched together, with the viewing angle of the center shot being 85 degrees—and it’s precisely the center shot that comes from the main 108 MPx camera. The surrounding part of the image is then captured by the ultra-wide sensor, which makes the resulting photo very sharp.
