Xiaomi explains why it used a curved display in Mi 10

Among the main features of the new smartphones Xiaomi Mi 10 is their 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display. It makes up as much as 89.8 % of the front area, and Lei Jun, General Director of Xiaomi, has now explained why it is curved.

The best display in Xiaomi so far

If we disregard the more or less prototype attempt Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha, the display in Xiaomi Mi 10 is clearly the best one that has ever appeared in Xiaomi smartphones.

This AMOLED panel with a micro-perforation for the front camera was developed in cooperation with Samsung and TCL. It offers a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a sampling rate of up to 180 Hz.

In addition, it reaches brightness up to 1 200 nits, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, an sRGB color gamut, and high contrast at a ratio of up to 5 000 000 : 1.

For the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro model, its features were further improved by adding a TÜV Rheinlad certification for low blue light emissions. Together with factory calibration with values JNC <0,55 and Delta E <1,1, they categorize this display panel at a professional level.

Why is the display in Mi 10 curved?

Many people ask themselves this question. Some like this feature, while others would rather have a flat surface. In any case, the Mi 10 models are already out, and nothing will change on their curves.

As Lei Jun himself explained on the Chinese social network Weibo, the panel’s curvature is determined by the design and the physical thickness of both smartphones. Always, more powerful components such as image sensors, batteries, and so on take up more space and weight.

So the complete and extensive Mi 10 lineup managed to fit into the body with a thickness of 8,96 mm and a weight of up to 208 g. That’s why the developers decided to use a small trick—not only the display, but also the back panel of the smartphone was curved on the sides. This allowed them to create a clearly attractive look that gives the impression of a thinner overall device.

It’s a completely logical step, too—an argument from Xiaomi’s side as well—which gives the Xiaomi Mi 10 models a premium look and aligns with the best design of competing devices and today’s trends.
