Big scandal: MediaTek was cheating in performance tests. Among them is also the Redmi Note 8 Pro

Although the company MediaTek was often seen as a less powerful alternative and its processors were criticized, the situation regarding the product quality of this company has partially returned to normal.

However, the portal AnandTech, specialized in comparing various tech attributes, has brought a comprehensive report in which MediaTek is repeatedly accused of falsifying performance tests of selected Android smartphones.

Among them is also the popular model Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Cheating by MediaTek: AnTuTu and GeekBench

Whether it’s the popular tests AnTuTu or GeekBench, in multiple services, the maximum performance of the devices appeared a bit higher than what they actually achieved.

The aforementioned tech portal compiled a clear chart, pointing to falsified results—i.e., in which smartphones and in which services the results were falsified.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro appeared in the list of devices that presumably had falsified performance results.

Among the devices that achieved higher performance on paper—that is, whose results were likely falsified—are also popular smartphones such as Redmi Note 8 Pro, Realme C3 or Oppo Reno 3 Pro.

How did the cheating work?

The editor of the portal revealed that the smartphones contain a file named „power_whitelist_cfg.xml“, which, when running performance testing in the most common benchmarks, switches the processor performance to a so-called sports mode. This mode boosts the processor performance overall by up to 30 percent.

A table showing potentially falsified results of the respective smartphones in the respective services.

In certain tasks, however, the processor performs in the benchmark up to 70 percent better than it really should. The performance boost was applied for benchmarks such as PCMark, Antutu, Antutu 3DBench, Geekbench, AndroBecnh2 and others.

Statement from MediaTek

“MediaTek follows accepted industry standards and is confident that performance tests accurately reflect the capabilities of our processors. When testing our processors, we work closely with manufacturers, but lately, some brands have shown more flexibility in configuring their own devices. Some companies design devices so they run at maximum performance based on reference benchmarks to showcase the chips’ peak capacity.”

In real-world scenarios, of course, there are many factors that determine how well a processor performs. MediaTek processors are designed and optimized to deliver the best user experience while also maximizing battery life. If someone uses a performance-heavy program (for example, a powerful video game), the chip intelligently adapts to provide sustained performance. This means users can see different performance levels across different apps, while the processor dynamically changes its performance.”

We believe that displaying the maximum processor specs in performance tests is consistent with other companies and provides consumers with an accurate picture of the device’s performance.”
