The development of the CyberDog robot brings new features: From now on, it can detect smells

Last August, Xiaomi officially unveiled the CyberDog robot. It’s a robotic dog packed with many cameras and various sensors. One of its best features is that it runs on open-source software.

Last year, CyberDog attracted a lot of attention

For many, this dog was one of the most curious products of the year 2021. From the very beginning, it could move, do backflips, and learn different commands. Its newest ability is definitely going to surprise you. It even has a sense of smell.

A new “feature” is enabled thanks to the air pump in the front of the robot. Here, air is collected and sent to two sensors that can detect scent. But that’s not all. After detecting it, this dog is also able to say what kind of smell it is.

It detects smells and will know where they come from

This is how it can recognize the scents of different drinks, foods, and even plants. New smells will probably keep coming. For the dog to be able to recognize scents, it was prepared from the start, but this functionality was initially disabled. Xiaomi has now activated it with a simple software update.

Xiaomi engineers claim that in the future, CyberDog will not only be able to detect odors, but also know where they come from. This is arguably the first device of its kind in the world that can recognize scents. In the future, this capability will be expanded—soon the dog should also be able to identify a number of selected particles in the air.

Affordable and packed with technology

Let’s also recap other interesting features, though they’re not new. The dog can move at a maximum speed of 3,2 meters per second, and sales have so far been limited to 1000 units. The price of this robot will pleasantly surprise you—it’s around 1300 euros in terms of conversion.

The most interesting and best-known competitor is the Spot robotic dog from Boston Dynamics, whose price is significantly higher – $75,000. CyberDog can follow its owner much like a normal dog and even reacts to voice commands. You can also control it via an app on your smartphone.
