Xiaomi refreshed the info about its first electric car at a conference, where it presented the possibilities of its autonomous driving. Now we’re learning a bit more about the estimated price of this Xiaomi EV.
We also know that the Chinese government is throwing smaller obstacles in the way of this project, and at the same time we’re finding out which segment this Xiaomi electric car will belong to.
Research revealed the price
Almost a year ago on the Chinese social network Weibo, a study was carried out where the company asked people how much they would be willing to pay for an electric car from Xiaomi. Back then, less than 1% voted for a price equivalent to €43,500.
Even though the initial investment into the project amounting to €500 million isn’t small, partnerships with other companies may still mean that the Xiaomi car will be among the cheapest electric vehicles on the market.
Apparently, we’ll get two versions
They say we’ll see two versions of this electric car: the cheaper version will run at 400 V, while the other one will bring 800 V, a more powerful powertrain, and greater driving autonomy.
Among the first to get involved in the project was HESAI, a manufacturer of LiDAR scanners and radar systems. Those are an essential part of autonomous driving.
They are also called ADAS and can recognize other vehicles, objects, and people in the front and rear parts of the vehicle, and can also check whether any vehicle is in the driver’s blind spot.
Xiaomi’s first electric car should start mass production in 2024, with an annual volume of 300,000 cars produced. The price shouldn’t exceed €44,000 in the conversion, meaning that at least this should be the amount for the more basic version. That would still be a lower price than the one from the American competitor, Tesla.
