Huami’s partner company Huami makes a wide range of smart bands and watches for Chinese Xiaomi, as well as under the Amazfit brand. The manufacturer is now bringing a new in-house processor called Huangshan 2, designed specifically for wearable electronics.

Huami brings Huangshan 2

On 15 June, Huami Technology, known for making wearable electronics, held its AI and innovation conference in China. Along with several AI innovative technologies, the company also introduced the second generation of its in-house processor called Huangshan.

Huangshan 2 arrives as a new product almost two years after the first generation. The chip is set to power upcoming smart bands and watches from Huami and was developed by the in-house chip R&D department. According to the manufacturer, the process was not an easy task, and only a few Chinese companies have achieved in-house chip production.

The launch of Huangshan 2 is a breakthrough from Huami, and the design and production of this chip took more than 450 days since the previous generation was introduced. The second-generation chip features a new architecture developed based on RISC-V technology.

The mentioned RISC-V is open-source and has recently been gaining ground in the tech world. Thanks to this, Huangshan 2 delivers higher efficiency than its predecessor, with lower power consumption and computing functions built specifically for wearable electronics.

Neural network module

The new chip also features a NPU neural network module. This allows it to achieve higher computing efficiency, which the final product can benefit from.

An example is better detection of heart weakness, such as atrial fibrillation, based on heart-rate data, which is 7-times better than the predecessor.

Software algorithms have also been improved, by as much as 26-times. The new chip will also support Always-On mode, which intelligently reduces power consumption.

Huangshan 2 will offer a new coprocessor called C2. This processor works when the main chip is in sleep mode or even switched off. Experimental data so far indicate an overall power consumption reduction of up to 50%.

The second-generation chip will bring performance improvements mainly in relation to functions related to the user’s biological data. The chip is expected to go into mass production during the fourth quarter of 2020 and should appear on the market for the first time in 2021.
