If you have a camera at home, you know the deal: during the day it delivers a nice colorful picture, but after dark the camera switches to infrared light. What you get from the recording is then a gray smear in which you can’t tell the color of a jacket or whether a dog or a cat ran through the hallway. Xiaomi Smart Camera 5 Pro is the first camera from the brand that solves this with a second, exceptionally bright lens and a light built into the base. In China, people were so interested that the crowdfunding met its goal at 1 351 %. Xiaomi hasn’t shipped it to Europe yet, but you can still order it to Slovakia.

Color night vision: the camera lights up by itself in the dark
The color in the night is provided mainly by the second sensor with a resolution of 4 Mpx and a size of 1/1,8 inch, whose lens with an aperture of f/1,0 lets in substantially more light than typical cameras.
The noise in the dark is then cleaned up by the image processor with artificial intelligence. If that still isn’t enough, the camera turns on a soft light in the base with a color temperature of 3 000 K, and the colored image will—according to Xiaomi—be maintained up to a distance of 10 meters.
The light isn’t on all night. In intelligent mode, the camera records in black-and-white while it doesn’t see anyone, and only when it detects a human figure it turns on the lamp and switches to a color image. For the bedroom and kids’ room, it’s meant for the classic infrared mode, whose LEDs with a wavelength of 940 nm don’t glow red in the dark, so they won’t wake anyone. In the Mi Home app you’ll find it under the name “Black-and-white night vision”.
You can use the lamp even outside of recording. The dim warm light is useful when you get up at night to check on your child, when you don’t want to turn on the main light—and the camera can turn it on even if a dog or a cat walks through the room.
4K in the day and sixfold zoom
The daytime image is handled by the main sensor with a resolution of 8 Mpx, a size of 1/2,7 inch, and an aperture of f/1,6, recording in 4K resolution 3 840 × 2 160 pixels. HDR helps it with backlight, so even the corner near the window won’t be blown out. Thanks to the high resolution, you can zoom in up to six times in the app, and—according to the manufacturer—you’ll still be able to see details, such as what’s on the table at the other end of the room.
The camera head rotates using two motors with a 360-degree horizontal range and a 174-degree vertical range, so it can see from the corner of the room from the floor all the way up to the ceiling. When a person or an animal moves in front of it, the camera turns toward them on its own and tracks them, which is useful, for example, for a dog that runs around the apartment during the day.
Artificial intelligence built right into the camera and a call by gesture
Recognition is handled by a chip with performance of 1,5 TOPS right in the camera, so nothing of it runs on cloud servers. The camera can distinguish a human figure, a face, a crying child, a pet, and suspicious sound, and it will send you alerts to your phone without sending the actual recording somewhere. The lens can be physically covered with a shutter, you can mask selected areas of the room in the image, and a separate Xiaomi security chip takes care of encryption.
The most fun feature is a call by gesture. When a child or an older parent stands in front of the camera and shows OK, the camera will call you on your phone automatically—and you can talk. Two microphones with noise suppression capture voice from up to 15 meters away, so you don’t need to stand right next to the camera. Reply plays through a speaker with a larger sound chamber so the voice doesn’t sound tinny.
Records to a card, to the cloud, and to NAS
You can save recordings to a microSD card with a capacity of 16 to 512 GB, to the cloud, or to a home NAS—which is the cheapest option—if you want continuous recording without a monthly subscription. AOR mode records the whole day, but while nothing happens it stores fewer frames per second, and when the camera detects an event, it switches to full smooth recording. That way, you’ll fit much longer footage on the card before the camera starts overwriting it.
It connects via dual-band Wi‑Fi 6 on both 2.4 and 5 GHz, which Xiaomi says delivers 60% faster transmission than the previous generation. With 4K video, you’ll appreciate it, because with a slow connection the footage stutters. You can place the camera on a shelf or mount it to a wall or ceiling using the bracket from the package, and power it with a 5 V adapter over a two-metre USB‑C cable.
Chinese version and China region in Mi Home
Xiaomi hasn’t yet announced that it will launch this camera in Europe. Here today, it sells the Xiaomi Smart Camera C701 with 4K, which switches to infrared illumination in the dark and outputs a black-and-white image. The Smart Camera 5 Pro from Gshopper is therefore the Chinese version, and in the Mi Home app you pair it only after switching the region to mainland China. The app will stay in English, but expect that the camera’s own voice announcements may be in Chinese.
The catch is mainly the integration with other devices, because Mi Home always shows only devices from one region. If you have a vacuum cleaner, lights, or sensors paired on a European server, the camera in the Chinese region won’t see them in automations—and you’ll switch regions in the app. If you want to use it as a standalone security camera to watch your apartment, a child, or a pet, none of that will restrict you.
European Xiaomi cameras if you don’t want the Chinese region
If you care more about the European version with a warranty from a Slovak seller and a shared region with the other devices in Mi Home, pick one of the cameras that Xiaomi officially sells here as well. Closest to the new Xiaomi Smart Camera C701 is the one with an 8 Mpx sensor, 4K resolution, and Wi‑Fi 6. On Heureka it costs less than €50, but at night it records only in black-and-white. The Xiaomi Smart Camera C500 Dual also has two lenses like the new model, but it uses them differently: the wide-angle one covers the whole room, and the tilting one with a narrower field of view lets you zoom in on details. The image resolution is 2.5K.
The cheaper option is the Xiaomi Smart Camera C400 with a 4 Mpx sensor and 2.5K resolution, whose infrared LEDs with a wavelength of 940 nm don’t glow red at night. If basic apartment security in 2K is enough for you, you can buy the Xiaomi Smart Camera C302 for less than €30.
