Company Xiaomi is preparing its flagship devices Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. However, the latest reports also mention a software change that the new smartphones will come with. It’s a software change—from MIUI to a completely new HyperOS overlay.
Xiaomi has a new HyperOS graphical interface
After years of preparation, Xiaomi is changing the name of its typical graphical interface MIUI. This branding is ending for now, and the new interface will be called HyperOS. What’s more, this new system should blend the Android operating system with Xiaomi’s own Vela system.
Many Chinese manufacturers have decided on a change like this, and in the names of their interfaces they use the OS suffix in the style of the American company Apple. The statement from Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun only confirms it.
Xiaomi first tested build variants under the name MIUI 15. We saw that during the presentation of the device Redmi K60 Ultra. However, the manufacturer decided to switch, and the new branding HyperOS is supposed to represent a new graphical overlay, with features that leaked information had described as MIUI 15-related functions.
This interface will also be based on the Android operating system. So it isn’t a separate bundle of mobile services like, for example, Huawei uses. The tested MIUI 15 builds are based on Android 14, and the HyperOS software should run on the same version. For now, though, we don’t know the availability of this update in China or on the global market.
A surprise of the day: MIUI 15 isn’t happening
There’s no doubt that the change of the graphical overlay branding can be considered the surprise of today. After thirteen years, Xiaomi is ending its MIUI, and just a few weeks after the leaks, a new layer called HyperOS is arriving. The system also changes its name—from MiOS.
The announcement from Xiaomi’s team currently doesn’t go into details. However, what is certain is that this new graphical overlay will be officially unveiled alongside the flagship smartphones Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro.
Even though this is an OS graphical overlay, Xiaomi is communicating the news a bit differently. In person, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun—the face of the company—describes HyperOS as “our new operating system”.
Minimalist design and a new ecosystem for different devices?
In the first official photo shared by Lei Jun, the co-founder is holding a test device in his hand. This phone—and the case that protects it—also shows the HyperOS operating system installation screen with a truly minimalist user interface. On it, you can see the Xiaomi HyperOS logo and the home button.
The HyperOS settings screen is simpler and definitely looks like a completely different operating system. Even the arrow button—one Xiaomi has been using for years—has changed. That’s why it makes sense to point out that HyperOS’s design, look, icons, and user interface will be a bit different from the current MIUI. This is also necessary so the overlay change is obvious at first glance.
But what happens to MIUI? Will it be HyperOS exclusive to China, while in the rest of the world we’ll have MIUI 15? Or maybe MIUI 15 will be canceled and won’t go beyond the beta version that many users can already download and test? Will HyperOS be intended only for Xiaomi mobile phones?
Or is the company’s plan to launch a single OS that covers its entire ecosystem, from smartphones to e-scooters, including smartwatches, refrigerators, and even its upcoming Xiaomi Car? We’ll have answers to all these questions soon, after the manufacturer’s press conference.
