MIUI 14 Official: Xiaomi promises 60 % higher speed, a cleaner environment, and a minimum of pre-installed apps

At its final conference for 2022, Xiaomi unveiled, among other things, a new version of its Android skin, MIUI 14. It comes along with new flagship models Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro. Let’s take a closer look at what’s new it brings.

A new modern design

Every year, MIUI’s environment comes with a new version that also brings a revised and refreshed design. This time is no different, so you can look forward to several visual changes.

Along with the new logo, during the beta phase we could already see a new design for some system apps like the recorder, compass, calculator, or clock. The Control Center and the notification panel have also changed.

Goodbye, bloatware

Many of you, just like us, don’t like a lot of pre-installed third-party apps that most of us never use. This time, Xiaomi has listened to its customers, and in the new environment it reduces the number of pre-installed apps.

Another great update is that we’ll be able to uninstall some system apps that currently MIUI 13 doesn’t allow you to remove. So you’ll only be left with 8 apps that can’t be uninstalled: Contacts, Camera, Settings, Files, Browser, Phone, Messages, and GetApps (because it’s currently the China version of MIUI).

Maximum customization options

Xiaomi also paid special attention to system customization options. That way, you can customize not only the look of the environment, but also various widgets or apps.

The system will also add a new mode called Lite mode, which simplifies the environment and enlarges icons. This will be especially ideal for older users who don’t use many apps and want everything on one screen.

An improved gallery

The gallery for browsing photos has also received some new and very interesting improvements. It will offer a great text detection feature with the option to copy it directly from the image. This feature is available, for example, on the Google Pixel 6 with Android in version 13.

Another gallery novelty will remind you of older photos—just like Facebook does, by reminding you of a photo from the current day, a few years ago.

Speed and security first

The priority of the new MIUI 14 environment, of course, isn’t design changes, but improving performance, stability, and security. According to the manufacturer, MIUI in the new version will be up to 60 % faster. As an example, Xiaomi 12s Ultra is said to be 60 % faster with the new system and skin.

The amount of disk space needed for MIUI 14 will also be reduced. From internet memory, it should take up significantly less space compared to the older version. Battery consumption by apps should also be lowered by up to 22 %.

In the security area, detection of potential risks, scams via calls, messages, or apps is improving. Xiaomi also emphasizes security by processing sensitive data locally—without transferring it to servers unless it’s necessary.

Android 13 and supported devices

New MIUI 14 is closely tied to a new version of Android 13 it was built on. Even so, some smartphones that still run on Android 12 will also get an update to the new MIUI version. However, you’ll enjoy the full potential of the environment only with the upcoming Android update.

The models listed below will receive the MIUI 14 update first, with the rollout scheduled for January 2023:

The list of devices will of course grow over time. For now, it’s not officially known when the new skin will arrive in Europe. It’s estimated that it could come in the first quarter of 2023.
