MIUI Tip: A handy storage cleaner gets rid of the unnecessary “junk” on your smartphone

Today, as part of our popular MIUI tips series, we’ll take a look at the Cleaning feature that clears up your smartphone. In the end, we’ll show you how to quickly enable Dark Mode.

MIUI is packed with features

For many Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone users, we can say that the MIUI software interface is one of the reasons we use smartphones from these brands. We’ve liked MIUI ever since the first Xiaomi smartphones we got our hands on—and we still like it today.

MIUI’s success comes down to its simple, easy-to-navigate user interface and a range of standout features you won’t find in the menus of phones from other brands. Another big advantage is that MIUI developers listen to the voices of users and testers, and they try to incorporate those suggestions into the software.

The Cleaning app removes unnecessary content from your smartphone

In the past, this used to happen more often, but with the arrival of high-capacity storage in smartphones, memory filling up isn’t as common anymore. You’ve probably already seen a notification saying you don’t have enough free storage space on your phone.

With the arrival of 32 and storage units with more than a few gigabytes in devices, the problem seems to have disappeared—for now. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t occasionally clean up internal storage.

MIUI has a very handy and comprehensive app for that, which helps with both simple and deep cleaning. Its name in Slovak is Čistenie – originally Cleaner, and its job is to keep the system free of unnecessary files.

But don’t overdo it with cleaning, because some seemingly unnecessary files may belong to a specific app and help it start up quickly. The Čistenie app works intuitively and, in basic mode, automatically evaluates which files are suitable for removal.

Once you launch it, it quickly scans your storage and categorizes files under Cache, Ads, Installation apps, Remnants, and Memory. With a simple tap on the Clean icon, you can start a quick cleaning, or you can expand a specific category to choose which files to keep on your smartphone.

After clicking the broom icon in the top-right corner, users get access to deep cleaning. There, you can choose from photos, apps, memory cache, and also large files.

The advantage is that the user doesn’t have to tap through many apps—everything is handled quickly and clearly in one place.

Quickly enable Dark Mode

With the arrival of Android, 10 also came Dark Mode for the menu interface and individual apps. It’s becoming more and more popular, and thanks to the uniqueness of the MIUI overlay, users whose smartphones don’t have Android 10 yet can try this mode too. All you need is a smartphone with MIUI 11.

Dark Mode is less bright, which is easier on your eyes and, on smartphones with an AMOLED display, it also saves energy. Now we’ll show you how to activate Dark Mode in just a few simple steps.

  • launch the Settings app and, in its menu, select Display

  • in Display settings, choose Dark mode

  • in Dark mode settings, all you need is to enable the mode by tapping the switch
