Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra received the best photography specs the manufacturer could give it. In addition to the secondary display at the back and the liquid lens, it also got a top-tier night mode.
The well-known DxOMark ranking also praised the camera’s quality. The main lens with a 50 MP resolution and a Samsung GN2 sensor uses a new algorithm from the Chinese company called Xiaomi Night Owl, which we’ve already written about on our website.
“See in the dark”
Xiaomi Night Owl can reduce noise in photos in low light. During a long exposure, the camera captures up to 8 shots, processes each with different sub-algorithms, and—using AI—finally selects the best one.
Besides noise reduction, it can correctly correct the photo’s color range and improve stabilization. To do that, it uses machine learning, and with every night photo, this software gets even better.
In the photos below, you can see a comparison of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra’s shooting performance in normal mode versus after using night mode. After using Xiaomi Night Owl, the photo got brighter, the noise was reduced, and the objects in the picture were clearly recognizable.
Compared to the night modes of the competition, there’s no noticeable yellowish tint here—there’s minimal noise and the detail level is on a much higher level.
Xiaomi’s new algorithm is meant to compete with Google Camera, which is very popular and well-liked among users. Over time, we’ll see how this face-off between the two night modes turns out in a direct comparison.
We repeat that the new Xiaomi Night Owl night mode algorithm is currently available only for the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra smartphones. We expect it to roll out to future higher-end models as well. An update by which the manufacturer could bring this algorithm to older models isn’t out of the question either.
