On the Xiaomi Youpin crowdfunding platform, a very interesting product has appeared. It’s unusual watches that display the time using glowing tubes. The watch’s very construction boasts quality workmanship and a sapphire crystal on the front. You’ll also like the battery life, which, according to the manufacturer, should be up to 10 days.

Watches you may not have seen yet

At first glance, these watches will catch your eye with their rather massive build and unconventional design. To display the time, a so-called nixie tube labeled IN16 is used. This technology, however, is not new in the tech world. It has been on the market since the 50s of the 20th century.

It’s a glass tube that contains an anode made of wire mesh and multiple cathodes shaped like digits. By applying power to one cathode, an orange glowing discharge will surround it. Nixie tubes also impress with a fairly long lifespan, which can be up to 200,000 hours.

Stylish watches that will grab attention

Thanks to their unusual look and the technology used, they will attract curious glances from perhaps more than one geek. Their distinct appearance and technologies make them unique on the market. Operation itself is, in fact, very simple. For time display, just lift your wrist; then the watches automatically wake up. There’s also a timer function.

In terms of size, these are fairly bulky watches. Their dimensions are 48.5 x 39 x 15.8 mm. There’s no doubt they’re a tech toy intended mainly for geeks. That’s also suggested by the fact that nixie watches were worn by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Price and availability

The watches are currently sold only in the Chinese market. Their price is set at 1999 Chinese yuan, which is roughly 278 € / 315 USD. Availability on the global market is currently unknown. We believe that over time they’ll also be available through well-known international retailers.
