Singles Day, also known as Singles’ Day, originally began in 90.s in China as a student-made “anti–Valentine’s Day” for people without a partner. But in 2009, Alibaba turned 11.11 into a massive 24-hour shopping festival and sparked a global phenomenon. What started as a one-day event in China has become a multi-week discount marathon, with sales that beat all other shopping holidays.
For example, during Singles Day 2018, Alibaba recorded a turnover of up to $30.7 billion in 24 hours; in 2019 it was almost $38 billion, and during the extended festival in 2021 it reached as high as an all-time record of $84.5 billion! Singles Day therefore beats even the combined sales of the US holidays Black Friday and Cyber Monday by several times.
The scale of China’s 11.11 is truly unprecedented. Hundreds of millions of people get involved — just on the Alibaba (Taobao) platform, 11. 11. 2023 saw more than 532 million customers shopping. Logistics services have to handle an enormous number of shipments — during last year’s Singles Day, couriers delivered 639 million parcels in China in a single day. At peak times, their systems process hundreds of thousands of orders per second (Alibaba reported up to 583,000 orders per second in 2020).

A lot of products also ship to Europe and the USA; among the biggest AliExpress markets during 11.11 are, for example, Russia, Spain, the United States, France, and Poland. Of course, more and more shoppers also come from Slovakia and the Czech Republic — they’ve discovered the charm of Chinese sales and buy electronics or gadgets for a fraction of the usual prices.
