Xiaomi is preparing an interesting new device for the global market. The latest leaks from internal Mi Code suggest that the Chinese Redmi Note 17 Pro will arrive in the world under a double identity. In some countries, it will be sold as Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G, while in selected markets it will be labeled POCO X8.
However, it won’t be just a simple logo sticker, since Xiaomi is also preparing one major hardware difference.
POCO X8 will be the global version of Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G
According to information found in Xiaomi’s internal software, this is another step in the company’s global strategy. Instead of developing two different smartphones, the manufacturer will use the same hardware base and, depending on the region, choose the Redmi or POCO branding. Xiaomi has used a similar approach many times before, but this time it comes with smaller differences in the specifications.
Another interesting aspect is the timing of the reveal. The POCO X8 Pro and POCO X8 Pro Max models appeared on the market about eight months ago, while the base POCO X8 is arriving much later. Xiaomi has not commented on the reason for this unusual strategy yet, but it could be an effort to better tailor the offer to individual regions.
A massive 8340 mAh battery will remain even in the global version
A key advantage of the upcoming novelty should be an exceptionally large battery with a capacity of up to 8340 mAh. If these details are confirmed, it will be one of the biggest batteries ever seen in a globally sold POCO smartphone.
Combined with 67 W fast charging, the POCO X8 could offer exceptional battery life on a single charge. Xiaomi will likely keep one of the biggest advantages of China’s Redmi Note 17 Pro for international markets as well.
Not all specifications will be the same
Although both smartphones share the same base, Xiaomi decided to differentiate them with the camera setup. According to another leak, POCO X8 will have a simpler camera arrangement, while the global Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G will get a more practical solution.
POCO X8 is expected to offer a 50 Mpx main camera paired with only a 2 Mpx depth sensor. Meanwhile, the global Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G will get the same 50 Mpx main sensor, but the secondary camera will be a 8 Mpx ultrawide lens. That way, users will get significantly better options for landscape photography or group shots.
Expected specs of the POCO X8
Everything else should stay practically unchanged. The smartphone should be powered by a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 processor, along with a flat 1.5K OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Missing out won’t be 67 W fast charging, AI anti-fraud protection, or high durability per IP66, IP68, IP69, and even IP69K certification specs.
So it seems Xiaomi won’t be differentiating the brands just by design this time around. POCO X8 will be aimed at users who want the best possible price-to-performance ratio, while the global Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G will offer a more versatile camera in the form of an ultrawide sensor.
