In practice, this means they can significantly reduce surrounding noise on public transport, on the street, or in a café. Thanks to that, you can focus better on music, podcasts, or calls.
If, however, you need to hear what’s going on around you, just enable the Transparency Mode. It lets sounds from your surroundings into your ears, so you can communicate without having to take the earbuds out.
