Redmi has recently introduced its smartwatches Redmi Watch 2 and, just a few days later, also the Redmi Watch 2 Lite model aimed at the global market. At first glance, they look identical, but that’s not the case.
Differences can be found
These two smartwatches look almost identical. The European Redmi Watch 2 Lite is 0,3 mm wider, 0,2 mm thinner, and 4 grams heavier.
That slightly higher weight of 35 grams is most likely due to a somewhat bigger battery. The global model has a capacity of 262 mAh, while the Chinese variant has 230 mAh.
Despite the lower capacity, the Chinese model has a battery life that’s about two days longer—so on a single charge it can last 12 days, compared to ten days for the Lite model.
You’d be looking in vain for AMOLED on the Lite version
We also know what’s behind the longer battery life of the Chinese version. It uses a 1. 6 -inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 320 x 360 pixels. The AMOLED panel is less power-hungry for the battery, but it still delivers richer and nicer colors—and last but not least, it’s excellent at rendering black.
The Lite model only has a 1.55-inch LCD panel. It’s definitely a shame that Redmi didn’t use an AMOLED display in this version as well. The display was one of the weak points of the previous generation too.
A slightly smaller display size could mean the bezels are a bit more substantial, but it won’t be noticeably extra, since it’s only a minimal difference.
Both models include the same sensors for heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and GPS. The global version likely lacks automatic activity detection. It also doesn’t include an NFC chip, which is present in the Chinese version for contactless payments.
Which model is the better deal?
According to the paper specs, the Redmi Watch 2 model is a bit better than the Lite version. It’s a shame Redmi didn’t bring the same model to the global market. The biggest downside of the Lite model may be the lack of an AMOLED display.
The price of the Chinese version is 399 yuan, which is about 54 euros. The price of the global version hasn’t been published yet, and we expect it in the coming weeks.
