This is how call recording will work in the Google Contacts app on Xiaomi smartphones

The new version of the Google Phone app has introduced the ability to record phone calls. It has not been officially released yet, but the developers at xda-developers.com managed to test it.

The feature is not officially available yet

We told you that Xiaomi replaced the original Phone, Contacts, and Messages apps in global MIUI versions with the ones from Google at the beginning of this month. This happened due to EU directives and laws as well as those in other countries where Xiaomi supplies smartphones.

However, the company promised to try to bring back one of the most popular features that users lost after switching apps.

Things have moved, and Google is already working on adding the call recording feature to its Google Phone app. This was revealed back in mid-January / January thanks to the xda-developers team, which discovered, by examining the code in app version 43, that the feature was already implemented. When testing a newer version with the number 44, they also managed to try the feature.

Once this new feature is enabled, during every phone call—both incoming and outgoing—a button „Record“, i.e. „Record“, will be shown. Tapping this button starts recording.

The Record button icon will change to clearly show that recording is in progress. Tapping the button again stops the recording and the icon returns to its original state.

You can listen to recorded phone calls from the call log. The share button in the call recording interface allows you to export the recorded audio as a .wav file, while the speaker button on the left lets you toggle loudspeaker playback.

Eventually, it should also be possible to create/show a transcript of all recorded phone calls, but it failed during testing.

Recording from Google brings interesting features

When you first enable the call recording feature in the Google Phone app, a dialog will appear with the following text:

„When using the call recording feature, you are responsible for complying with applicable laws regarding call recording. Be aware that many jurisdictions require the consent of both parties for such recording.“

Besides that, during the phone call, Google will also play the recording to inform participants that the call is being recorded. After the call recording starts, participants will hear: „this call is now being recorded“ and when recording ends, they will hear: „call recording has ended“.

It is not yet known whether automatic call recording will be available later, as the MIUI app allowed. It is also unclear when call recording will be available to all users. For now, everything remains open, including the possibility that Google may never add this feature at all.
