Xiaomi Mi MIX FOLD is the brand’s first smartphone with a foldable display. That’s why it naturally attracts more attention than typical smartphones. This piece is already on display at the Chinese Mi Store, and the first lucky ones had the chance to see it up close.
A robust design
When closed, the phone has a thickness of 17,2 mm, which is quite a lot, but that results in a design that somehow combines two smartphones together. It’s a size that you’ll definitely feel in your pocket, along with the weight of 317 grams. When unfolded, the thickness is a pleasant 7,6 mm.
The folding mechanism is very similar to what the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 offers. The flexible hinge has a stronger tolerance, so it can hold several positions.
After closing, it’s possible to see a small gap. It’s a protective element to ensure that no grain of dust gets between the displays during folding, which could damage the screen. From the competition, we know that replacing a foldable display can run into hundreds of euros.
External and internal display
When closed, the user has a display with a 6,52-inch diagonal and an 27:9 aspect ratio. The manufacturer has adjusted MIUI for this stretched format to make it as pleasant as possible to use. From the photos, you can see that the external display has slightly wider bezels around the screen.
With the internal display, at the fold area you can see a subtle indentation—just like with the Korean competitor. It’s not a defect, and your eye stops noticing it after a few minutes of use. This technology isn’t far enough along yet for the display to be perfectly flat even after unfolding.
The attentive eye won’t miss that the internal display doesn’t include a selfie camera. So to take a selfie, the user has to fold the smartphone and use the lens on the external display, which is hidden in a small enclosure at the top right.
The camera layout is very similar to what the Xioami Mi 10 Ultra offers. Together with the Mi 11 Ultra, they share the technology of a liquid lens and various software features.
For now, the Xiaomi Mi MIX FOLD is intended only for the local Chinese market, but we expect it to become available through international sellers. Over time, the manufacturer could also introduce a global version meant for the European market.
