Xiaomi doesn't stop surprising the world of technology. It's shown through its latest concept called Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Edition, where a full-fledged Leica lens can be attached to the smartphone. Is this Xiaomi's entry into the world of professional photographers?
The presentation didn't take place like a typical conference by this Chinese giant, but only on China's social network Weibo, where Xiaomi first shared a video and then also posters of this unique smartphone.
External Leica lens attachable to a smartphone
The smartphone includes a 1-inch sensor for the main camera on the back. However, this sensor will also be complemented by a special Leica M-series lens, which is also removable.
Xiaomi is the first manufacturer in the world to install a full-fledged Leica camera lens in a smartphone to improve the smartphone's photography performance Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
The company claims that the new lens will help the device deliver a smartphone experience on par with a flagship, as well as a professional photography tool.
Two 1-inch sensors
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Edition offers two 1-inch sensors, with one being the standard sensor found on smartphones and the other located in the middle of the device. An external lens is attached to it. In addition, the module also includes an ultra-wide-angle lens, but it lacks a telephoto lens. That one is precisely what should replace the connected lens.
We got to know the Xiaomi 12S Ultra smartphone in early July, where it was unveiled exclusively for the Chinese market alongside the Xiaomi 12S and 12S Pro models. Even though it appeared on Xiaomi's global page, it won't be sold there.
Xiaomi 13 Ultra on the global market too
That should, however, change next year, when the Xiaomi 13 Ultra should also reach the global market, which Xiaomi CEO also confirmed Lei Jun.
There's no expectation that such a modular device from Xiaomi would actually make it onto store shelves. With this concept, Xiaomi is just showing what it's capable of and what it could look like in the future.
What do you think of such a concept? Do you think it could replace a real camera even for professionals? Would you welcome something like this for sale?
