Xiaomi is aiming to deliver a pleasant surprise in the high-end smartphone segment. From the upcoming model Xiaomi 17 Ultra, many people definitely have high expectations. Fresh reports from China’s certification authority MIIT have now revealed the existence of an as-yet unannounced model marked 25128PNA1C.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra will come with advanced satellite technologies

Apparently, this is the much-anticipated Xiaomi 17 Ultra in a special edition, designed to push smartphone connectivity up by several levels. The new model will enter the market with support for satellite calling via the Tiantong-1 system, sending messages through the Beidou satellite network, and it also won’t lack modern UWB (Ultra Wideband) technology. This is used for precise device localization in space.

Tiantong-1 is a Chinese satellite network that enables voice and data communication even where there is no mobile coverage—e.g., in the mountains, at sea, or generally during emergency situations. Beidou messages, in turn, provide two-way text communication under similar extreme conditions.

Thanks to these features, it’s no longer just an emergency SOS solution like some Western brands offer, but full-fledged satellite connectivity built directly into a flagship smartphone.

In addition, the device also features UWB technology, which is useful for secure short-range data transfer and for precisely determining the location of other compatible devices. This specific equipment suggests that Xiaomi wants to create an ultimate tool with its 17 Ultra Satellite Edition smartphone for users who want maximum connectivity in any conditions.

This model differs from a second certified smartphone marked 2512BPNDAC, which went through certification last month. Even though they have a similar label and presumably the same market launch date in December, this older model does not support satellite calling, nor Beidou messages. Although it has UWB, it looks like it’s a standard version of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. Because of this, people are increasingly talking about two variants.

The theory about two models was also confirmed by the brand’s president Xiaomi, Lu Weibing, during a livestream back in September. He explicitly stated that the Xiaomi 17 series will offer models Pro Max and Ultra, and that Ultra will be the primary carrier of new technologies. His words make much more sense now, since the certification of the satellite version clearly reveals these plans. Of course, that also comes with a higher price. Similar devices with a satellite chip typically cost $150 to $250 more than their standard versions without this functionality.

It’s also interesting that—according to internal sources—this satellite model could be coming to the global market as well, which would make it one of the few “mainstream” smartphones with full satellite connectivity available outside of China. If that turns out to be true, Xiaomi could potentially get ahead of its competitors in this area.
