Although we only recently got the global launch of Xiaomi 17 Ultra on the global market, reports about its successor, Xiaomi 18 Ultra, are already available. It looks like Xiaomi is preparing something big again, and if the latest leaks are confirmed, the new model could completely change how we think about mobile photography. What exactly is it about?
Xiaomi 18 Ultra will surprise you with an 200 MPx telephoto lens and LOFIC
Naturally, the greatest attention among the “Ultra” models is drawn to the cameras—especially the telephoto lens. The same will be true for the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, which is set to bring a 200 MPx telephoto lens with a physically large, 1/1,28″ sensor, meaning better light capture, more detail, and higher-quality photos even in poor lighting conditions. In other words, the pictures should look more realistic and sharper even at high zoom.
A major leap forward should also come from implementing LOFIC, which enables better processing of extreme lighting differences. For example, situations where you shoot against the sun, but there’s also plenty of space in the shade in the frame
This is where the new system is supposed to pull out details exactly where today’s mainstream smartphones fail. The result should be photos with a significantly better dynamic range—and above all without overexposed spots or lost details in the dark.
Xiaomi 18 Ultra will also bring continuous optical zoom
An even bigger revolution could come from continuous optical zoom, which—by the way—is also available on the current model Xiaomi 17 Ultra. Unlike today’s smartphones, which switch between fixed zoom levels, you should be able to use optical zoom without losing quality.
Another big lure for Xiaomi 18 Ultra will be macro photography. The upcoming flagship is expected to allow focusing from a distance of about 15 cm, which is a significant improvement over the previous generation.
In practice, that means you can capture extreme detail of objects, and thanks to the telephoto lens, get natural background blur that’s hard to simulate using software alone.
Of course, this kind of technology won’t be cheap. The price of Xiaomi 18 Ultra is expected to go even higher than with the previous models. So it’s best to prepare for it in advance.
