Today in Xiaomi they’ve once again shown that progress and development are nothing new to them. Just a little while ago, at a press conference in China, they unveiled their next new release from four – smartphones Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G.
The “Pro” suffix suggests the new smartphone will be equipped with the best hardware we know in the mobile world. The new smartphone didn’t fall short of its name at all. Let’s introduce it.
5G support and up to 7 antennas
Perhaps the most significant new feature in the Mi 9 Pro is support for 5G networks. In Slovakia and the Czech Republic, such a smartphone doesn’t really make sense yet, but in China, 5G networks are developing at an incredible pace and coverage is growing. Xiaomi therefore can’t fall behind its competitors.
The just-revealed smartphone comes with up to 7 antennas for receiving 5G signals. It supports 5G networks in three bands (n41, n78, n79), and the manufacturer measured a maximum download speed of up to 2.02 Gbit/s. In real life, that means downloading a 1.89 GB big game in an insane 15 seconds!
The biggest upgrades are under the hood
At the heart of the new smartphone is the most powerful mobile processor of its kind – Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus. It has eight cores with maximum performance up to 2.96 GHz and a graphics chip Adreno 640.
Two memory versions were introduced: one with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB storage, and another with 12 GB of RAM and storage up to 512 GB. For AnTuTu Benchmark lovers, Xiaomi also shared a result of 480 830 points. So the smartphone’s performance is truly massive.
Such powerful hardware also needs intensive cooling. The innovative liquid cooling technology (VC Liquid Cooling) was developed specifically for this model, and its goal is to reduce the processor temperature under high performance by up to 10.2 degrees. A three-stage overheating protection system includes a 5-layer graphite material setup, a copper coil, and a thermal gel.
Other upgrades include a new haptic motor for intense vibrations with a response time of just 10 ms. It should get closer to mechanical keyboards, delivering a professional 4D gaming experience on mobile.
The battery charges in just 48 minutes
Another big upgrade of the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro model is charging. The phone supports fast wired charging with power up to 40 W. Its 4000 mAh battery goes from 0 to 100% in an unbelievable 48 minutes.
To use this fast charging, you’ll need a 45 W charging adapter, which Xiaomi also introduced. The advantage is that with this adapter you can also charge, for example, a laptop, so you’ll only need one adapter for multiple devices.
And that’s not all. Wireless charging is also supported, reaching up to 30 W in this case. Here, charging takes 25 minutes to reach 50% and 69 minutes to reach 100%. To use such fast wireless charging, you also need compatible chargers that support it.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro is also the first phone from this brand to support so-called reverse charging. It has power of 10 W and you can use it to charge various other devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, headphones, electric toothbrushes, and more.
New charging accessories
The manufacturer unveiled a 30 W charging stand with air cooling, priced at 199 yuan, which is about €25 / 670 Kč. There’s also a new, most powerful power bank from the manufacturer – the new version of the Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 3 with power up to 50 W!
It has a 20,000 mAh capacity and can charge one laptop and two smartphones at the same time. Its price in China is 299 yuan, which is €38 / 990 CZK after conversion.
The design hasn’t changed much
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G has a thickness of 8.54 mm and a weight of 196 g. It offers a classic design similar to the Mi 9. It will come in three color versions, including a new pearl white variant. The back panel is made of glass and is curved with a 2.5D finish on all sides, making the phone body look slimmer.
The front is made up of a 6.39-inch display with a notch for the front camera. It’s a classic Super AMOLED panel with a 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution, a maximum brightness of 600 nits, a contrast ratio of 60000:1, and 90.7% coverage of the front. There’s also an integrated in-display fingerprint sensor.
The cameras are the same
There’s no upgrade to the rear cameras in this case. The primary sensor is a 48 MP Sony IMX586 with a 1/2″ sensor size. Pixel size is 0.8 µm and the aperture is f/1.75. The secondary one is a 16 MP ultra-wide Sony IMX481 sensor with a 117° field of view and an aperture of f/2.2.
The trio is completed by a 12 MP telephoto lens Samsung S5K3M5 with 2x optical zoom. Pixel size is 1.0 µm and the aperture is f/2.2. The 20 MP selfie camera features AI for photo beautification.
No NFC and no great sound
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G has everything you need in a premium smartphone. Whether we’re talking about the Bluetooth 5.0 with support for the LHDC Bluetooth HD codec for high-quality wireless audio transmission. Lei Jun, among other things, also presented a new generation of wireless earbuds Mi True Wireless 2, which we’ll cover in the next article.
The smartphone also got a new linear speaker with a large 1.04CC sound chamber. You also won’t miss the popular NFC module. What’s a bit disappointing is the lack of the still much-requested 3.5 mm jack connector.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro also comes with the latest MIUI 11 system, which the manufacturer presents.
Prices and availability
As is customary for Xiaomi press conferences in China, there was no mention of a global version of the smartphone. Well, we’ll have to wait for that information. At least we know the official China prices, which are higher than what we’re used to with Xiaomi smartphones.
However, it’s a smartphone with the most expensive hardware for year 2019, so the higher prices are justified. On a global scale, the Mi 9 Pro becomes the cheapest 5G smartphone on the market. These are the prices for residents in China:
The version with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage for 3699 yuan, converted 475 € / 12 250 CZK
The version with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage for 3799 yuan, converted 486 € / 12 590 CZK
The version with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage for 4099 yuan, converted 525 € / 13 600 CZK
The version with 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage for 4299 yuan, converted 550 € / 14 300 CZK
