Xiaomi tablets aren’t dead yet: New speculation about the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 has emerged

Xiaomi is probably preparing its new tablet, the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5. The first information leaks about the upcoming device have already surfaced.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5: A new generation of Xiaomi tablet?

Android tablets have been pretty weak in the tech market, and that’s been the case for the past few years. The coronavirus pandemic, however, put manufacturers in a tough spot, and the tablet has become a very important and popular tool for video calls—whether during distance learning or working from home.

According to the latest information leaks, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi should also be working on its new model. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 is expected to follow the previous Mi Pad 4 and Mi Pad 4 Plus models, which were officially unveiled back in June 2018.

New statements from Xu Jieyun from Xiaomi Group say that this year an update to the tablet portfolio will be introduced, bringing a MIUI system customized for the tablet environment. However, the first photos show that the Chinese manufacturer has taken inspiration from its biggest competitor—iPadOS.

For now, we’ll have to wait for more official information, but leaks about the upcoming Mi Pad 5 tablet have already appeared online. It should offer thin bezels and also a pair of rear cameras in a module that resembles the current Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone.

As for the technical specs, we should be looking forward to a 2K display with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz and a sampling rate of up to 480 Hz. The screen should be an LCD type and will be covered by Corning Gorilla Glass protection of 5.

On the back, there should be a multi-camera module, with the main one (SONY IMX586) offering 20 million pixels. It should also be complemented with a 13 MPx ultra-wide macro lens. The device body will be made of an aluminum alloy, similarly to the competing iPad. It will also include—again following the iPad—a fingerprint sensor on the side frame and a magnetic capacitive stylus.

Price and availability of the product

The base configuration of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 should come with a Snapdragon 870 processor, Wi‑Fi 6, and it should weigh 510 grams. The 8 GB RAM + 128 GB configuration should be available for 3999 Chinese yuan. In the current conversion, that’s approximately €513 / $617 USD.

The higher configuration 8 GB RAM + 256 GB should then cost 4299 yuan (551 € / 664 USD). The model with higher RAM up to 12 GB + 512 GB storage should be available for 4999 yuan (641 € / 772 USD), and the top model with 16 GB RAM + 1 TB storage should be priced at 5499 yuan (705 € / 850 USD).

If we look at the leaked technical specifications, the new Mi Pad 5 is aiming for the premium tablet segment, which is currently mainly occupied by models from Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. That would mean it’s Xiaomi’s first presence in this segment.
