The most sought-after products of these days in China are medical face masks. Manufacturers and retailers weren’t prepared for such a surge in demand, and there are not enough masks.
The online sale was also launched by the Xiaomi Youpin store, but the demand was so huge that their servers couldn’t handle it.
There aren’t enough face masks, people are panicking
It seems that residents of China, especially in provinces most affected by the dangerous coronavirus, view the use of a medical mask as a matter of life and death. That’s why it’s no surprise that demand for masks has increased many times over during this period.
Xiaomi also launched the sale of respiratory masks through its online store Xaomi Youpin. The sale was started on 28.1. at 16:00 h and, due to excessive demand, the store decided to limit purchases to one package per person.
The package includes 20 masks and is sold for 39,90 yuan – after conversion about 5,30 € / 134 CZK. Users from Hubei province, where the outbreak is concentrated, got an extra discount.
After the sale went live, the site traffic increased in an unreasonable way—so much so that the servers couldn’t handle the load and crashed. As early as 16:32 h on the same day, Xiaomi Youpin posted a statement on social media where it apologized to customers who couldn’t get the product.
During the sale, traffic was reportedly far higher than the people in charge could even imagine, and this influx couldn’t be managed. Of course, all masks sold out within two minutes.
The seller expects new stock of medical respiratory masks to arrive, and as soon as it does, the sale will be restarted.
