Xiaomi clarifies how it will work going forward with the names of their products

Chinese Xiaomi announced that it plans to remove from its name the label “Mi“. Now the manufacturer clarifies how it will be with the names of their products from now on, and what the differences will be.

Xiaomi and product names

Over the past few days, a report appeared online that the Xiaomi brand will remove the word “Mi” from the names of its products. This is quite a substantial change after more than ten years of use, and the manufacturer is now explaining why it decided to do so.

Despite the fact that, for the most part, it’s about unifying products, the Chinese manufacturer wants to become a recognized brand under its own name, i.e., Xiaomi. In its statement, it now explains what the product names will look like and when the change will be launched. The goal is for users to associate the products—especially smartphones—with the “Xiaomi” brand rather than “Mi”.

Manufacturer statement

“Starting from the third quarter 2021, the ‘Xiaomi Mi’ product line will be renamed to ‘Xiaomi.’ This change will unify our global brand presentation and remove the difference in how the brand and its products are perceived.”

It will take some time for this change to show up in all regions. With the rollout of the new brand identity, two separate product lines will be placed under the parent brand.

  • Xiaomi products represent the pinnacle of technology and deliver a premium, first-class experience
  • Redmi products bring great innovations at a more affordable price and are aimed at a younger audience

This distinction will also be reflected in the updated logos, where the Xiaomi and Redmi logos will appear under the parent brand logo. The renaming of the product lines, Xiaomi and Redmi, will also apply over time to our smart (IoT) product ecosystem.”, it’s the brand’s statement.

Based on the published statement, the manufacturer clearly makes it known that starting from the third quarter of 2021, it will stop using the “Mi” label—just like we saw when the Xiaomi MIX 4 smartphone was announced. It’s also possible that this update will affect even the September smartphones, such as Xiaomi 11T and Xiaomi 11T Pro. The manufacturer also once again emphasizes the independence of the Redmi brand, which will focus on a different customer segment.
